According to Mrs169 our ageing Sebo K1 vacuum is on it's way out and something new and shiny is required. We have carpets throughout, stairs and a dog that moults and even though I appreciate cordless vacs have come a long way I'm dubious they will have the sustained oomph that a proper 240v unit can produce - happy to be proved wrong though.
Cylinder type units appear to be preferred over uprights but performance should be key (at least if I have any say in the matter - so probably not!)
Any recommendations on what make\models we should be looking at

Thanks

You're right to stick to mains powered and you won't go far wrong with another Sebo.

Not flashy but they just work and far better designed for a long hassle free life than a Dyson.

I (Mrs Pier) stuck with a SEBO and got reconditioned one - old school power. It is brilliant and very shiny.

Miele M1 (previously known as the C3) Cat and Dog are excellent.

Shark here. 12 years old and has only needed a new mains lead. Would buy another.

I'm going to buck the trend here, but we swapped our Sebo X7 for a Dyson V11, and have never looked back.

The Sebo was so cumbersome, it turned vacuuming into a real chore. The Dyson is so much lighter & more manoeuvrable you're finished in half the time. To my eye there's really not much in it in terms or result either. I'm sure other cordless perform similarly.

Having the electric motorised mini heads on the Dyson (or equivalent cordless) definitely does a much better job on the stairs than the passive heads or air motor heads too.

I've got a Henry too, love it for DIY and brick dust/rubble, but again Dyson runs rings round it when it comes to general vacuuming.

Had it 6 years, used every day and hasn't missed a beat.

We’ve got a Miele too and been pretty happy with it. Only caveat is that I seem to spend a few occasions stripping the “turbo head “ to disentangle dog hairs. We look after our daughters Retriever quite regularly and he moults for England compared to our Spaniel.

We’ve also just bought a Akitas V8 battery jobby as we’ve got a lot of hard flooring downstairs and it’s easy to whip out to pick up “bits” and dog hairs. Quite impressed with it for £55.

I thought Dysons were a bit on the toy side. I've had an Electrolux Ultra One for nearly twenty years and it's a very powerful vac. My wife bought a Dyson V6 animal which was a bit of a toy. Okay for small quick jobs. Had it for ten years, three batteries. Got a V15 for less than half price last December and it's like night and day compared to the V6. A heck of a lot more suction power and battery life.

The Dyson is a lot more "grabbable" and suited to adhoc cleaning. Probably easier if you've got less floor area, more rooms, two or more storeys to clean, stairs. The corded vac requires slightly more faff to get started - cords, powerpoints - but I found corded vacuuming became a Sunday morning routine thing and not so much a chore.

Depending on your environment you could accomplish some of the cleaning with a robot vacuum. They have their pros and cons. The bits they can't do, you do with a cordless.
