Seems like a step in the right direction but I don't know why it required a BBC investigation to get the Police interested. It's been obvious to most of us for years.

Being discussed on the Jeremy Vine show just now, absolutely no mention of the typical demographic of the shop owners - which is fine but a caller still phoned in to claim it was all false information from the far right. Essentially suggested this is all racism and minorities are being targeted for no reason. Genuinely astonishing.

I have used the Scottish barber ever since.
HMRC have been quite happy to enjoy their cut of money laundering - it's high time this scam was sorted out. I was in Keswick a few weeks ago - I went past a 'Turkish' barbers in a prime location - the usual gold plated chairs inside and a few leather chesterfields, obviously a very expensive fit out, and two Iraqi looking chaps inside, feet on the counter on their mobile phones. Still there a few hours later and, still, no sign of any customers.
It would be the simplest investigation to have these operations covertly watched and a footfall count done then compared against their accounts. Disgraceful when you see how hard working individuals are harrassed by HMRC for minor oversights/infingements.
I wouldn't mind betting there is people smuggling cash being cleaned via many of these operations.

Quite incredible that the BBC reports this as some kind of magical investigation finding out something miraculous no one would believe.
The general public has known exactly this for years and years, who could believe a small high street would need 15 vape shops and 20 barbers taking cash only with fancy fit outs.
We know the reason though. A police force and government that shies away from reality because "racism". Nothing more nothing less, just hiding from their own culture, they created.

But the chap who owns the whole parade obviously needs to be kept in Porsches and such like and I am sure the parish council or whomever likes the fees they get or whatever so...
In fairness to both Police and Trading Standards, both have been hollowed out over the years by successive governments, so this is a sticking plaster for the media, nothing else.
This is where Wiltshire Police are as one of the forces with the smallest budget already:

Following a Strategic and Financial Planning Summit I held with my Chief Officer Group in November, we have already identified the efficiencies currently required for the year ahead.
As with our Financial Review Programme (FRP), through which we identified much of the nearly £8m worth of savings for 2025/26, our priority remains achieving these savings in ways that minimise the impact on our people and on frontline delivery.
We must continue to focus on the function of our organisation rather than its form, ensuring that we protect the quality of service we provide to our communities and victims of crime.
Broadly speaking, the 2026/27 efficiencies will be achieved through a combination of:
• Redesigning how our Local Policing, Specialist Operations and Crime Investigations commands are structured
• Removing frozen posts - subject to appropriate scrutiny and consultation
• Technology and equipment efficiencies aligned to our longer-term technology strategy
• Further rationalisation of our estate footprint"
Additionally, Labour insisted that the Neighbourhood Police teams be increased across the county, which meant that, with even less resource, police were moved from other areas such as traffic, rural crime and response to fill the posts required while significant numbers of civilian posts were lost.
Like shoplifting, ASB and other such crimes that are rife across all towns and cities, there will never be an effective response until a government chooses to properly fund it as opposed to indulging in gesture politics and adding some funding while removing even more.
Exactly the same thing is happening with the MOD!

Nail on head re disgraceful re HMRC as I was hounded by them years ago, due to a vicious neighbour. The stress was Horendous and my ex wife & I came close to fleeing the country. We just couldn t believe that they came after such a tiny fish as my self employed self, newly starting out in a small biz that I started from scratch. I daily go past one of these Barbor shops it s in a Very affluent area, is expensively fitted out & which suddenly opened up in the district some 18 months ago. It s shut most days,
but is open on Saturday mornings. It simply reeks of being crooked.
