Hi ph, I have a Ford focus 1.5 ecoboost three cylinder, which makes a sound like piston slap for a few minutes after a cold start. Maybe fine but it’s been bugging me so I got a cheap borescope and looked at the bores. Can’t see the same sort of scuffing I see on some of the bore scoring vids (Porsche)on you tube, but there’s a fair amount of vertical lines, as per the images. Trouble is, whilst I’m mechanically minded I’ve got no idea if these sort of lines are normal in a car engine at 60K miles.
Grateful for opinions!

Hard to tell conclusively from those pics but I would think that looks like normal wear to me.

Piston slap/borescore it certainly aint.

Are you sure it isn't the timing chain you are hearing?

Hm. Hadn’t thought about timing chain. It makes a racket for a second or two when you start it from cold, which I’d put down to the hydraulic tensioner slacking off when there’s been no oil pressure for a while. Will have to have another listen with that in mind.

Those marks don't -look- like anything serious.

Sounds much more likely than piston slap, hence why I mention it.

Check in the area of the timing chain/tensioner at start up.
