I thought about using the search facility, but as this technology seems to move on at such a pace, any older threads with recommendations may be now out-dated.

What is the current thinking?

DVD+ or DVD- ?

Ideally, I want a machine that has a decent HDD capability (Some stuff I will record is the "record it because I am not at home, but will watch once then discard" variety)

Don't want cheap and nasty, but also do not want to have to re-mortgage the house!

Your suggestions please!

Both types of blank discs cost the same.

- is more readable by a pc, + closes sessions quicker so is more readable by other dvd players.

Not much in it.

Yes, but which format is winning the war?

I don't want to have a machine in a couple of years that it is difficult to get reasonably priced blank stock for..... asin the Betamax/VHS wars..... we had a betamax machine that you just couldn't get blank tapes for!

I hear you, but with 100 blanks discs costing £20 that should see you right for a long time compared to betamax tapes

Blu-ray or HD DVD is supposed to be the replacement for both.. whether it wins, who knows?

I've got a player / recorder that handles both formats:
