2025 Ford Focus
Discussion
I m an OAP and 1st April last year I had an epiphany so I traded in my 11 year old Dacia Sandero Stepway diesel for a Ford Focus in magnetic grey. Eight days later I picked it up. Still got my Dacia Duster 4x4 as my daily although I do like driving the Focus. Trying to keep it as original as possible but Temu is overflowing with goodies for it.

Are the auto boxes on these still absolutely awful like previous Fords?
Probably Thankfully Ford long done away with the Getrag Powershift, I'm rebuilding 3 to 5 of those every week - proper terrible gearbox - However Ford now have a new problem. The 8 speed Aisin Warner transmission you find in their current line up are coming to me with a failure at less than 20k miles in some cases, all down to a bad bearing design for the stator inside the gearbox. They're suffering stator failure with all the Aisin Warner 8 speeds, whether that's in a Ford, Peugeot, Lexus, etc. Another terribly designed transmission. They're suffering from stator failure so much that the stators themselves from Aisin Warner are on back order for months. They literally cannot make the parts fast enough to cover the fail rate.
As for Ford's 10 speed, don't even get me started!

Sorry for the rant. Nice car!
Yeah, the 7 speed auto in these is a good box. But a car like this should be a manual imo.
Love these mk4&4,5 ST's.
If i need a larger car to replace my mk8 Fiesta ST at some point one of these either as a HB or estate has to be top of the list. Quite hard to find on the used car market over here in Finland though, as they sold so few and the people who purchased them new seem to keep holding onto them, probably as the new car market has almost nothing to offer anymore to people who likes cars like this.

I'm an automatic transmission specialist. That will be a 7F40 in that. They're pretty solid. I've only had them in with torque converter judder due to lack of oil changes, which I fix with repeated drain+fills plus cleaning additives. Make sure you keep on top of the transmission servicing, I do them every 30k which a dealer would class as excessive (although most dealers would refuse to do it or say it's "sealed for life") but you have to do them often as the torque converter does give off a lot of carbon and contaminates the oil. If anyone services it for you in the future, know that it's just a simple drain + fill on that so isn't expensive. The filter is internal and unserviceable. Do NOT let anyone "reset adaptions" or use a flush machine on it - You will almost definitely kill it.

Thanks for the information on the 7F40. Reassuring that it’s a reasonable ‘box they’ve fitted. No problem, every day is a learning day even if it is someone’s rant.
