They do die.

My original one is long gone, it just keeps managing to breed replacements faster than the old ones die off.

If it's *dead* dead it'll be fairly obvious as it'll be very brittle.

How much water has it had recently? Ours was looking pretty dried out but regular watering over the last few weeks means it’s ready to bloom soon.

I'm afraid it looks that way as it should be rocketing away by now. Can you get some cuttings from next door as it's very easy to propogate.

Mine looked dead for two years after I followed the instructions to cut it back severely ...and now it's growing again ... like clematis can look very dead and provided those stems aren't broken can spring into life

Gently scratch away a bit of the stem and see if it’s green or fleshy underneath.

It’s been very cold in May so it might be dormant still / they are hot weather plants. Also consider what kind of winter you’ve had and aspect.

Finally the old addage I think is to leave stuff until the summer equinox or somesuch until deciding it’s gone

Yep. Green = alive, brown = dead.
