Advice: Petroleum Engineering
Discussion
Hey folks,
I'm in my final year of my Civil Engineering degree, and am considering doing an Msc in Petroleum Engineering at Heriot Watt Uni.
Is there anyone in the industry here who could give me a bit of info on the degree? I want to end up working offshore on the oil rigs. I could go offshore with a Civ Eng degree, but don't find Structural Engineering very attractive anymore.
So any experiences of Petroleum Engineering here? Would anyone reccommend it?
cheers for the help,
Robbie

What do you want to do offshore? Do you want to work for the Oil Company or a Service Company or the Drilling Company? There's loads of jobs offshore that you don't even need a degree for let alone an MSc in Petroleum Geology. I assume you are thinking along the lines of oil companies and either Well Design/Reservoir Engineer type of thing but you might be surprised at how little time the Oil Company guys actually spend on the rig.
If you want to go offshore you might be better off considering one of the many types of work done by the servive companies. My own area is Electric Line Logging (not to be confused with Slickline in case anyone else comes on). There is a fair amount of Geology involved but I don't need a degree in it, just an understanding of the basics and how to interpret the data. My degree is Marine Technology with Offshore Engineering but I don't use any of it really.

Intresting, cheers.
I'm interested in working for Shell or BP, as a drilling engineer or something similar. I'm not too clued up on how the whole system works, which is why I posted my question.
But having a look in graduate brochures etc Petroleum Eng seems to be the route many people have taken to get into the industry.
I just like the sound of the offshore lfestyle, and the cash! Plus the degree sounds interesting.

As a general comment, those with Masters degrees are far better set to go to the upper levels of companies than those with a Bachelors.
It also will assist you greatly should you wish to work overseas.
In many cases companies screen out those with Bachelors and just look at those with Masters for top jobs. Is it right? - maybe not - is it reality? - absolutely.

Why not go for a seismic survey job? Plenty about, and excellent money. I worked for www.PGS.com and they were fantastic, (Until the oil crisis a few years back eventually hit us and we had to shut the crew down
