..spotted it at the bargain offer price of £12 over lunchtime and it's 15.5%.

anyone tried it - I'm fairly well stocked up but if it's decent I may well snaffle a few?

You've got to like the style of wine for it to be worthwhile. It's made from grapes that have been left to dry in the sun. The high levels of sugar in the fruit are what drives the alcohol up and it still has a fair bit of residual sugar after that.

I don't care for it. Tastes a bit sweet and stewed to me and is a bit of a bully as far as food pairings go (and it needs food IMO). Parmesan, hare pappardelle, venison or wild boar stews.

Alsi have some occasional bargains but it's a bit like Châteauneuf du Pâpes - high name recognition and many sub par producers happy to fill supermarket shelves when the good stuff stays domestically and/or costs more.

I love the stuff hence the question smile

I've a collection that I don't wish to touch just yet, including a few high end Bertanis, so I will buy the cheap stuff when available as even 'bad Amarone is better than no Amarone' (to borrow Woodie's gag).

I'll happily glug it at £12 a bottle with homemade pizza. I've had some decent cheap ones from Aldi in the past that have really improved with keeping.

I think I'll give this one a go.

(I still have 6 bottles of 2016 Pomerol bought from Aldi a few years ago)

I remember that deal. I think I might have been the one to post up about it. I managed to grab 18 bottles (long since drunk)

How was it? I had one at the time and decided to lay the rest down.

I think I may have posted it first IIRC - I happened upon it by complete accident when I popped into Aldi in Workington of all places to grab a sandwich when I was there on business - there was a full gondola of the stuff right next to the check outs for a tenner a bottle. Well I should have cleared the shop as without wanting to sound snobby, 19 Crimes would be peak red in Workington and I suspect no one would have know what they were looking at.

....I had to trawl the 3 Aldis in Carlisle later that week to garner the last 6. I may crack one this weekend and see how it's come on.

Good. Too bloody good.

Textbook merlot. Really ripe with typical plummy fruit and great integration of soft tannins despite being quite young. Balanced acidity. Should have been more patient as I expect at a decade or 15 years it would be really good but it was so friendly and moreish, it was one of those bottles that it's difficult to resist pulling a second out when friends are round.

I got lucky in Elland. 19 Crimes? That would be an Elland residents' idea of a night out.

Asda amarone was decent if I recall. A bit 'thin', but that's ok for me as I prefer a ripasso anyway.

Do what I do and buy a bottle, taste it in the car park, and if it's any good, go back and fill your boots.

rofl

"True council" would be to open in the store and drink some with the kids, as is done with cans of Coke, etc... laugh
