Picked up a 2017 M140i Shadow Edition at the weekend on 70k miles. Bought privately for a reasonable price.

It’s running a few extras…

Engine:
- Stage 2 map (Approx. 440bhp)
- Uprated downpipe
- PCW custom exhaust
- K&N filter

Cosmetics:
- Full KSB low line kit
- Reiger rear diffuser
- Carbon roof spoiler
- M4 steering wheel

Acceleration is a really visceral experience from 30mph upwards, it’s absolutely rips through the gears, and sounds incredible with the sports exhaust. In sport/sport + it’s pretty loud and burbles and pops. In eco pro it’s just a completely normal car. I am enjoying being back in a smaller car after the Porsche Cayenne and one of the main reasons was to get back to modern technology I was missing.

Interestingly, my early Dragy times compared to my mapped 335d show the 335d is quicker to 60 (3.81 v 4.41) and very similar to 30-70 (3.31 v 3.38). The M140i struggles to get the power down, but I suspect it will dip below 4 and be quicker once I get it to hook up. Irrelevant in the grand scheme of things, but I find it interesting to compare, and one thing I have realised it what absolute machines the 335d are when mapped!!

Plans:
- Full service
- Front tyres (MPS5)
- Dyno run to satisfy my curiosity about what figures
- Possibly look at air intakes
- Full clean and detail
- Slightly shorter number plates for a cleaner look
- Couple minor cosmetic changes, delete the chrome at the back and change the starter button to blue

Cosmetically it could do with a drop in ride height but I can’t deal with the speed bumps and the hassle it brings so will leave it as standard for now.

Looks awesome. Really understated but fast! I'd avoid the shortened number plates IMO as they look a bit tacky.

Lovely M140i, looks like its in good condition and had some useful mods done already! Interesting you went from an F31 to an M140i (ignoring the Cayenne) as I did the same, although mine was a lowly 330d which wasn't modified.

An LSD is annoyingly quite a big improvement to traction and a bit of an oversight by BMW not to fit as standard, I would recommend one if you are struggling with getting power down and it'd help a lot with the 0-60 I suspect.
Have you got xHP done? You should be able to tell if the dashboard has the gear you are in next to the drive mode (D1/D2/D3 etc) then it'll probably have it, if not then its a really good upgrade and only a couple of hundred quid to get sorted.

Depending where you are in the country but I will probably have a set of Bilstein B8's and Eibach springs for sale soon off mine, they made a massive improvement to ride and handling over stock and probably the mod that made the biggest improvement.

I hope you enjoy it either way, they're annoyingly a really good overall package with some choice mods and the b58 seems to be the internet's sweetheart at the moment so you won't be short on videos on YouTube to watch for inspiration! (Top Dead Centre recently did a good few videos on one and Mighty Car Mods just got one as well)

Just to clarify it’s a normal 7 number plate, it’s just 30mm shorter. Not the super cropped ones, I know what you mean though they can look tacky.

Noooo don’t ignore the Cayenne it was the 4.8 V8!!

I had XHP3 on the F31 so I have lived with it, and liked it. A quick look tells me it’s about £400 now to have fitted, so not cheap.

Debating a cold air intake, XHP and a Dyno run to tie it all together But that’s like adding £1k to the purchase price. We will see.

Will check out the channels you recommended, cheers.

That looks really nice squire; they're a lovely motor - I'm a big fan of those and the 135i in all honesty

I agree; if not already, the xHP box map would be a superb first investment - I haven't had it done to the F31 as it's the wife's car now and she's not interested (in any mods, at all) laugh But my pals had it done to his F31 320d and 330d and it makes such a difference to how they drive, more so in sport

Will you be keeping the 'pops n bangs' map?

Thank you I’m chuffed with it. I think it will be staying for now as when it’s in Eco it’s discreet. The inner child in me likes the sport mode but it will be for when traffic is light and not in populated areas.

Iv just sold mine after 5 faultless years, looked almost identical to yours.
I’d highly recommend a diff when running bigger power and they need some extra tyre on the rear really.
Mine was running a hybrid turbo with other mods a smidge under 500bhp/540ftlbs there sure are rapid when there’s grip!
Mine was a daily, did loads of track days and some 500+ mile trips in perfect comfort no bother not a single issue in that time besides a window motor.

I kept it pretty much stock tbh, even debadged it. Had intake, downpipe, fuel pump, hybrid turbo, M LSD, Bilstein coilovers, M4 lower arms, some other chassis bits bushes etc. Managed 173mph at a straight liners 1 mile event.

Important delivery!

Also made my first change, Armaspeed Cold Air Intakes are £1200 new which is fantasy land. Saw one on market place and made an offer that was accepted for a fraction of that. Gave engine bay a quick clean as it was filthy, it needs a full going over when I have time. Pleased with the difference and it sounds very nice.

It sounds great! Get that nice whoosh/induction sound without being intrusive.

As a stage 2+ M135i owner (similar power and torque) I d second the recommendation for an LSD.

For suspension, Birds B1 is good and doesn’t lower too much, but expensive. At the other end of the spectrum, a simple swap of rear springs to standard M135i springs will help a lot, because the factory rear M140i springs for some reason were way too stiff. You can pair the factory M140i/M135i with Bilstein B6 to keep factory height.

If you start to feel like the rear end is a bit loose, it will be the rear subframe mounts. Subframe mount inserts will improve things for not much cash. If you are OK with a bigger labour bill then I d recommend full replacement of the bushes.

Enjoy!

I have a Dragy more for my own interest rather than trying to get the best times, and the results have been interesting against my previous F31 335d. I perhaps didn’t give it as much credit as it deserved, because it was so clinical and quiet putting its power down but time wise it holds its own. The M140 is so much more visceral and loud with the induction and exhaust.

F31 335d was mapped to 391/770nm but was obviously heavier and also had stage 3 XHP mapped.

M140i circa 440/600 nm

So the Xdrive helped with the launching, with is pretty obvious. However, as you get rolling the M140i is quicker in the midrange.

The faster you go the more the gap widens

I finally had time for a clean and I was quite impressed with what I found, one small dent and a few stone chips.

Plans for the immediate future:

-Full service booked in and a check over
-The exhaust tips need refreshing. Cheap fix
-Ordered an aluminium charge pipe to fit myself
-Blue starter button and black surround for the boot
-New wheel centre caps
-Full detail and ceramic coating
-PH stickers biggrin
-Change the white crash bar wraps to black

Longer term:
-XHP stage 3
-HPFP
-Dyno and a remap
-Suspension as long as I can keep standard ride height
