Calais to St. Emilion via Le Mans - route help.

I'm driving from Calais to St. Emilion next month, stopping overnight near Le Mans to break the journey up.
Looking for some PH guidance as to which roads to take in on the way down there please.
I'm happy to jump on the motorway for bits to miss out some of the boring sections, but would ideally like to do most of the route on decent country roads that are fun to drive.
Scenic would be nice, but I'm far more interested in (and would like to prioritise) driving roads.
Is it as simple as plotting a route and trying to use as many D-roads as possible?
If all else fails, can I just set my sat-nav to avoid motorways and tolls, then trust it'll take me the fun way?
