I ve bought a big, Czech taxi - Skoda Superb
Discussion
After an unfortunate incident my wife had in my 2011 Octavia vRS on Monday, I decided not to bother waiting for my insurer to confirm that it would not be economical to repair. Whilst browsing the classifieds on Tuesday morning, I spotted a rather nice looking 2022 Superb for sale at my local dealer.
So I called and arranged to see it. Got the usual spiel from the dealer about how much interest there was in it and could I come in today? Since I was working from home, I went in that morning to find him on the phone fielding another call for the car.
He gave me the keys, asked me to promise to bring it back and I took it for a test drive. I was pretty much sold in the first five minutes. I love the spec, it drove really nicely and is loaded with kit. I returned to the dealer, spent ages telling them I didn t want their various add-ons and then we shook on the asking price.
I returned today to collect it and am now the proud owner of a 2022 Skoda Superb Sportline iV

I am a very happy boy. Cars have come on quite a lot in technology terms since 2011 and I ve spent half the afternoon trying to figure out all the buttons and menus.
But it s a lovely thing. It has the optional adaptive dampers, so can do smooth and wafty, but also tighten things up a bit when you want. It s plenty quick enough with just over 200bhp, has a 30-mile electric only range but weighs over two tonnes, which you can definitely tell under braking.
I m just giving it a charge as the garage handed it over the zero battery, but have managed over 40mpg since I picked it up. I kept my last car for over 10 years and based on initial impressions, I can imagine that I d be very happy to do the same with this one.

It'll be lovely when they put the colour coat on...
I do sort of agree. I’d have loved if it had been in the dark green that Skoda offered on this generation of Superb. But in the metal, the grey is actually a lot deeper and glossier than it looks in the pictures. I actually prefer it to the more usual silver/grey.

Nice car. Enjoy!
Cheers
Just picked up a ‘23 Golf GTE and I imagine this has the same running gear. It’s so slick. The transition from park to drive, then electric to engine is almost unnoticeable. The DSG box works well too. Just nipping round the villages on electrons is something I wouldn’t like, but I really do. Getting a solid 30 miles on this weather. Enjoy!
I have a Passat B8 R Line 2016 at the moment thats done 125k and starting to creak at me.
Superb is what I'm thinking about replacing it with but just can't get the similar version in a Superb. The Other option is Cupra Leon but it's far smaller I understand.
I had an Uber in one of these as well a couple of years back and preferred the cockpit to mine.
You've now got me looking again.

Thanks for all the kind words. Lots of comments that I won’t respond to individually, but will try and cover everything.
Firstly, my wife is absolutely fine following the accident - thanks for asking. She feels bad at having written my old car off, but if I’m honest, I think she’s done me a favour. I had the settlement proposal from my insurer and it was very reasonable at just shy of £3k. Which considering I paid £7.5k for the car in March 2016, represents a very reasonable total depreciation of 4.5k in ten years.
Just got back from my first drive with the battery charged (and yes, poor form from the dealer not to charge it before handover) and I’m very impressed. I averaged 85mpg in mixed driving and the battery still has about 30% charge.

The additional weight over my Octavia is very noticeable under braking from higher speeds, but I just need to adapt to that. Ride is very smooth and relaxing in comfort mode but feels noticeably more tied down and responsive in sport. That said, it doesn’t really feel like a car you’d want to hustle down a B road.
The hybrid system is totally seamless and the DSG box very smooth. Were it not for the information on the dash, I’m not sure I’d know what the systems were doing. They just get on with it in the background. Not sure if this is standard spec, but mine has gearshift paddles behind the wheel, which seem quite handy for holding lower gears downhill, or dropping a gear or two for an overtake/acceleration without needing to wait for the box to kick down.
Driver aids seem minimal. There are no speed limit warnings, no lane departure and I’ve dialled the emergency braking back to its lowest setting. Steering is very light but does pick up a bit of weight in sport setting.
Oh, and the engine is a 1.4 TSI with a 13kWh battery, putting out 215bhp. And yep, it’s meteor grey.
