Fast (ish) Estate

Had my Volvo 850T5 for six years but it sadly died last year, I currently have a Honda CRV that belonged to my Father, good car but not my cup of tea. Been looking at V70R's but seems they have a number of potentially expensive issues. So, budget is 10K, Volvo or Mercedes estate's are preferred, MPG not an issue as I do very little travelling these days and have a couple of 'toys' in the garage....

All suggestions welcome, thanks in advance fellas.....

They seem to be rare as but a C300/C350 petrol S204 C-Class. I occasionally look for one as a replacement for my C180 as they tended to be absolutely loaded spec wise but the rarely come up...

A Subaru Legacy would be my first choice. Try and get either the 2.0L turbo or the 3.0L NA with the 6 speed manual, failing that, the 2.0L turbo with the 5 speed manual is still good. The 5 speed autos aren't as good as the manuals, and if you want an auto, then there are plenty of other cars to choose from.

Failing that, how about an Octavia VRS (the mk3 with the performance pack, you get bigger brakes and a clever front diff) or the Seat Leon, which is the same thing but slightly less practical and more powerful.

You can get a BMW E91 with the 3.0L turbodiesel, 3.0L non-turbo petrol, or 3.0 twin-turbo petrol engines.

The Volvo V70R you mentioned - that's a Haldex AWD and a relatively heavy car, I'd avoid it personally if you're keen on driving.

The Audi B7 RS4 and B8 S4 conclude the list of fast estates if you want a manual gearbox.

If you want something a bit more sensible, the 2.4L V70 and 2.2L Mondeo are both good, as is the 2.0L Skoda Superb, or even the Octavia, the Volvo and Skodas are both available with AWD.

If you don't mind an auto, then there are endless Mercs, BMWs, Audis and Jags to pick from. Also check out the Subaru Levorg, and maybe an EV if that's your thing.
