Current Used M Car Pricing
Discussion
Hi guys,
Looking to see opinions on current used M car values - specifically F Series and G series.
Bit of a backstory to understand my thinking. Had an F82 for 2 and a half years, doubled the mileage from 26k up to 52k - depreciation was £4k.
Had an F90 M5 for a year and a half after that. Mileage 28k to 48k - depreciation was 13k.
Since then, an F82 the same year and miles as mine had when I sold it privately is basically the same price (3+ years on).
F90 same age and miles as mine had is basically the same if not more than I sold mine for privately (£37k).
I'd like to get back into an M car this year, saloon required so thinking F80, F90 or G80.
F80s seem artificially inflated right now. Anything 17' on and sub 50k miles is at least £35k - which makes it nearly the same price as an F90 on similar mileage. I say artificially inflated as they've been at this price level for years now and they don't seem to drop. I think this is because the G80s are similarly holding their money but are at a higher price point so out of reach for those with an F80-level budget.
I'd like an F80, but the F90 feels a lot more car for the money and is really a generation newer. If I was picky on spec (individual colour etc) then an F80 is actually more than most equivalent F90s around that age - which seems wrong.
If you look at Audi as a comparison - RS4s and RS6s on the same age and mileage have a noticeable difference in price with the RS6 being a chunk more.
G80s and G82s seem like they've barely dropped in years. I remember when I was buying my F90 The cheapest ones were still late 50s.
Short version.
- Do you think F80s are overpriced right now in relation to other models?
- Do you think F80s and F90s are due to drop soon?
- Do you think G80/G82s are likely to drop soon?

The problem with your logic is you're using previous depreciation experiences as a benchmark for what you think the market should follow, but the values of the cars you're after are driven by demand and desirability. We know there's demand as you want one yourself!
I don't think M-cars are too bad generally. Even 10 year old M2s are still at about 40-50% of original value. The reason it feels scarier is the new prices are so much higher now, which keeps the used prices high too.

I'd say the M5 is the biggest risk (I did my nuts in on an F10 M5 that I had from new maybe that colours my judgement) the F80 seems to be holding its money compared to what I sold mine for back in 2019, what you lose depends on how well you buy, be that auction/private sale or used dealer/main dealer there will be quite the spread between them before you even think about the monthly drop via CAP.
I can't see a well bought nice example of a used F80 doing it's nuts in though.

Sorry, my crystal ball is currently in the shop having some maintenance done to it.
Could you recommend an indie? Mine needs a service.resolve10 said:

That makes sense. It just feels a weird order in which they've settled that's all. A 2019 G80 M3 is more than a 2019 F90 M5 on the same miles. But I guess if you go back a generation further it's the same - F10s are less than F80s.I don't think M-cars are too bad generally. Even 10 year old M2s are still at about 40-50% of original value. Just seems odd when you compare with AMG, RS - the higher up model is usually more expensive based on same age and miles.
The earliest G80s are nearing the age where mainstream lenders won't offer PCP on them - yet they are still nearly 60k to buy. That's surely got to limit potential buyers.
M2s do seem to hold very well, especially the OGs as they have a bit of a following.

I think you're right. More expensive to run and more to go wrong. I felt hard done by with my M5 too as the M4 that preceded it lost so little with the same use.I can't see a well bought nice example of a used F80 doing it's nuts in though.
Do think F80 is the pick, seems like a seller's market though as there's not that many later ones sub 50k miles for <£35k. Barely any difference in price between private sales and dealers too.

Indeed. Particularly in manual and unmodified, which is becoming a rare combo. They don't seem to be listed at much less than £28k/£30k. Whether they sell is another matter.I wouldn't know what to replace mine with so I might just keep it forever or sell it to my son who is desperate to buy it. There is quite literally nothing like it on the market. It's also very cheap to run.
