I'm toying with either replacing or adding a bike. I think we all know at this point the answer will be 'add', but for context my current bike is a 2013 Street Tripe R and I've had it for 5 years now.

I tend to keep bikes for a while but my history is a B6 Bandit, CBR6F, ZX6R and then the Triumph so hardly earth shatteringly exciting and I'd did love the torque of a CBR1000RR that I borrowed one..

However recently I've started to get hankerings for things that sound nice. I really don't care how bikes handle, and in fact, I'm almost drawn to stuff that might be like wrestling a pig. Its more looks and sound.

Something red, with Termi's and an open clutch is what I've been thinking. I've always loved the 999 which given it made people sick in their mouths after the 918 etc seems to be favourable price wise.

Is there anything else I could consider? Budget anywhere from 4k up to 10 if I sold the triple. I would like a pillion as an option if possible. I saw a MT10 the other day and just based on sound I went a bit wibbly. If it means I sit in the garage and look at it for hours is a win for me and maybe the MT10 wouldn't work in that regard......so, the sound of a crossplane but not in a modern bike?

If it was me I'd get an MT10.

If I had lots of money and time, I'd get an old Ducati. But I prefer riding to fixing.

I'm not short on the latter 2 which is why I liked the idea of a 999. But I suspect the idea is better than the actual. Thanks for the reccomendation.

You can’t beat an Aprilia V4 for sound if that’s your main priority.

What about and Honda VTR SP1, sounds great like a Ducati but with a bit more reliability. Or an Aprilia RSV Mille or even a Suzuki TL1000r? they all sound great and the Aprilia and Suzuki are still generally affordable.

First of the v4 aprilias sound great! I have a 999 and a SP1… weirdly sound isn’t the reason I bought them… I just like how they ride. The sound is a bonus.

A Husqvarna Nuda 900 also sounds nice.

I rode both the 749 and the 999 and settled on the former as being more usable on the road. Mine was on standard pipes but still sounded glorious both at idle and while working its way though the rev range. It was sublime handling if you wanted to ride quickly, but much, much less fun at a more sedate pace.
It burned you (as in actually burned you, not just 'got a bit hot') with the LH rear cylinder header pipe in traffic if you had your left calf in a 'normal' position, the clutch was also rather heavy and the side stand made me nervous....

It destroyed my wallet needing electrical issues sorting (the battery and associated electronics are on the LH side in the path of any spray and added to that, the wires wear), the gear selector wore to the point of needing replacing, it failed to proceed on a number of occasions and I sold it as I couldn't take the worry that it would let me down. Again....

That said, I drooled over it in the garage as it looked stunning, it remains one of my most fun rides at Cadwell, and it managed a long weekend of touring in the Scottish Highlands without being uncomfortable. If I could afford to run another, I'd love to, but I can't, and the SV1000 sounds almost as good and is a lot more usable to ride on a regular basis....

If you have the time and money then you could get a good low mileage one with lots of history....but I'd have another bike as backup.

The Triumph Speed Twin 1200 sounds awesome even with the standard exhaust, looks great and it'll be reliable.

If you really want a Ducati, then only a Ducati will do.

The problem is, the 'best' ones are expensive and most of them can be expensive to have serviced or repaired.
I've owned a few and done lots of miles on them with no real bills.
DIY'd everything apart from one £100 repair.
But I've always accepted they might throw me a ££££ bill one day.
My current one is an ST, so one of the least fashionable and not terribly valuable, especially as mine has a fairly high mileage.
If you enjoy working on bikes as well as riding them, there is plenty of support and knowledge out there to help you run one of the older ones.

Aprilia v4 tuono or speed triple?!

The MT10 is bloody good, although tank range is limited.
The aprilia V4 is quite cramped if you are tall.
There are loads of low mile Ducatis of all sorts of style for your budget. How about an old Diavel?

MT01?
I couldn't keep a constant speed on the one I test rode as it was either hilarious torque from the 1600cc Vtwin, or the crackle and pop of the Akrapoviks when you come of the throttle.

If it's the sound and not bothered about handling try a early Moto guzzi lemans, sounds lovely but I need to send it a letter to advise their was a corner approaching (pre email)

44 teeth are doing a bit on the 999r currently, worth a look to get some ideas of what to look for
