My sister has an 18 month old Acer laptop.

It hasnt been used for a while but on trying to use it the other day it seems pretty much dead. When you press on the 'on' button it whirs into life for maybe 5 seconds before shutting down.. no bleeps no nothing. Ive tried with and withough battery and no difference.

Any thoughts ?

cheers

My guesswould be it's a power supply issue.

Possibly the socket in the laptop that takes power from the lead has bacome a little detached from the main circuit board.

Does the laptop have a charging light? You should maybe try wiggling the power lead a little unti lthe charging light comes on, then leave it to charge for a while before switching it on.

My laptop suffers fro mthis problem, once the bat is flat, it whirrs for a moment on power up and then dies completely until I wiggle the power lead to a point where there is some juice going in.

It could be also that the battery has died and can't charge up. My old laptop wouldn't work without the battery being able to charge up. I bought a replacement battery and it worked fine after that.

I dont think its a power issue... though Im no expert !
It used to work fine with or without the battery in but not its the same symptom on either mains or battery power. The battery charge light comes on too when its on mains and this goes after its charged.. I tried the battery from my Acer and same.

Does the power light remain on even after the 5 seconds have elapsed? If so then maybe it's a hard drive problem that's preventing it booting up.

My laptop had a HDD problem from the day it was born (though I didn't realise this until very recently), it got progressively worse until it started with the symptoms you described last week. I would guess it may have been dropped recently.

Anyway bit the bullet, bunged in a new hard drive and its now performing faultlessly.

Try taking the battery out, and then removing the RAM. This can normally be done by removing a small flap on the underside of the laptop to access the chips. Put it all back togather again and have another go. Have this problem from time to time myself and this normally cures it.
