New car - £5,000
Discussion
Its possible that my car is going to be written off following driving over a f
king massive pipe. It does mean I get to look at new cars which I always enjoy!
After some suggestions with the following criteria.
Automatic.
Five doors.
Decent leg room for all (Im 6ft 4, step son is nine but going to be tall. We cant use my partners VW Tiago as one has no leg room).
Ideally petrol- Ive had diesels since 2010. Whilst I do a far few miles (15,000 to 20,000) I'm thinking petrol might be better with prices.
Something with a bit of power. Its PH after all!
Ive had the following over the years.
BMW 320D (current)
BMW 330D
BMW 520D
BMW 528 x 2
VW Golf
Ford Mondeo ST (diesel)
I like a bigger car.
I've got a budget of £5,000.
I'm drawn to the 2.0 Ford S-Max for some stupid reason.

Pretty sure a Ford Mondeo or S-Max of that era will be a powershift, which ought to be avoided at all costs.
"Bit of power" - how much? Going for a performance model will mean you'll need to look at older, higher mileage cars which will be nearer their end of life. Having said that, £5k should still buy something reasonable.

I thought powershift rang a bell. I havent looked into them at all yet. Thats my plan for thursday.
Not sure about power. Something that will manage motorway speeds with ease. Fun down A and B roads on my way to work.
My 320 is about 180hp which is enough. I dont need huge power, but a lot more than my partners 1 litre s
tbox.

tbox. Can you charge at home? At 20k miles for petrol assuming a generous 40mpg, that's £3600 just in fuel each year. Even assuming it has perfect reliability and just needs a couple of oil changes a year, that's still well over £10000.
You could pick up a high mile model 3 (batteries even on early cars will be good for 300k+ miles) for around £10k and still be far better off financially over 3 years, plus you'll have tons of leg room. Only issue is you'll find the wife will want it instead.
Edit, in fact if you're spending £300 a month in Petrol, this is almost a free car: nicked from the leasing thread...

At 9p a mile over 6k that's £381 a month, then say £30 a month in electricity.
Certainly worth running the numbers imo with a brand new car under warranty with no mot needed.

At that mileage I would not be too concerned about diesel.
I’d suggest an xf https://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/227354739484?_skw=jagua...

Not a great selection of S Max's around in the 5k bracket.
I've had an eye out for several months as I fancy one as a second car.
For 5k you are often looking at stuff around the 100k mile mark though you get the occasional private sale for less pounds or miles.
There was a nice looking white 2.0 ecoboost (they are all powershift) on 79k miles with a local dealer for 4995 recently but it sold in a week or so.
I had a 2.0tdci (163 bhp) with powershift for 3 years up to 75k miles which gave me no bother though the general advice on here and elsewhere is to avoid them.
The 2.2 diesel has a conventional auto, not the powershift, though finding a decent one of those for 5k is a challenge.

Great cars, be aware that pre 2008 are not E10 compatible. Only thing to really look for is rusted exhaust. If you do a search for carbon build up that’s largely irrelevant in the UK, wouldn’t worry about it. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=FH-uxUvO6Yg

You can’t buy a more reliable car of its type.
Don’t expect more than around 25 MPG in mixed driving.

I'd avoid any dual clutch auto as they all have issues, also with your annual mileage a diesel really does suit your usage.
