Recommendations for budget tool chest
Discussion
Hi all, I've set my sights on the SGS tool chest, budget around £100, anything else worth looking at?
I was looking at getting second hand but by the time I've collected/ fuel cost it's not really much cheaper than brand new.
Had a look at the SGS STS300 (slightly more stack, 1.3m height) and STS1000 (looks like less stack height 1.1m).
I don't think I can go wrong for £100 but wondering if anyone's tried both. Have ruled out halfords as seen reviews about the drawers being more rattly.
Currently have an ikea shelf with drawers but would be tidier to have a 600mm wide x 300mm deep tool chest with wheels.
Thanks

We have an SGS tool chest, can't tell you what model number, measures 90cm height and width and some 47cm depth.
7 drawers of increasing depth as you go down.
Recall it being around £200 when bought but might be out by £50 either way.
Its been really good, wife claimed it for her crafting, so it stuffed to the gills with all sorts and she uses the top as a sturdy workbench (for garage use i'd be inclined to cut a piece of plywood to fit), she has various lamps waste bags small tools etc clipped to the edges.
Two of the surprisingly robust wheels are steerable the other two locked in the straight ahead position, she'd have preferred all turnable.
Drawers all slide out smoothly.
For its budget cost better than one would expect.

What sort of stuff are you putting in it and how are you using it? The real difference between the hobby and pro stuff is the sturdiness and stability, I've had a lot of cheap chests ranging from utter junk to ok, at the bottom end you had to steady the chest when opening drawers with heavier tools in, the other issue you'll have is the drawers not being deep enough for some tools, particularly specialist tools like ball joint splitters for odd cars, they are often also short so you can't get long extensions and bars in. I do have a stack-on top box (obvious play on name) and it's not bad, it's cheap but it's one of the better cheap ones, it's about on a par with Halfords and the sgs, but all these really aren't up to proper garage use, or not for long anyway, but in a home garage with a socket set, spanners and screwdrivers to look nice they are good.
Incase your wondering what I am using now, I've moved on to Milwaukee packout, the drawers are still short so long things don't fit, but strangely despite being plastic they feel extremely solid, it's lasting brilliantly and the key for me is I can change the units around modularly and load just what I need in to the back of the car for a mobile job. Expensive though.
