Just back from the Good Food show in Birmingham and I've never felt so thin! There aren't half some very large overweight people. The place was awash with them. I never knew there were so many about. I was really shocked. I may be disillusioned though. What's it like where you are?

I was in Sheffield for work on Wednesday and went to Cosmo with my team as part of a night out.

It's a buffet bar and the size of some of the people helping themselves was, erm, eye-opening.

I'm sorry but a 'food show' and a 'buffet' are very likely to attract people who eat a lot of food and love food. Seeing large people in attendance should not come as a surprise.

I worked at the NEC car exhibition/show (whatever it's called) a few times and it was full of car enthusiasts. I wasn't shocked.

Costco usually has its fair share of very fat people, especially at a weekend.

I never mentioned 'buffet' and I realise that it being a 'food' show might attract certain clientele, but I'm not exactly small but I felt insignificant against most of the visitors.

I don't think 'foodie' means you have to be fat? I'd almost argue the opposite. I'd wager a lot of obese people have really poor diets and are not at 'foodie' levels of culinary interest. Most notable foodies I can think of are certainly not fat.

But it does show that we are perhaps too accepting/defensive over fat people. The obesity rate in the UK (and the western world) is staggering. Walk round any city centre and fat bellies/arses/legs is just par for the course.

Exactly this.

I have put a few pounds on this year and need to shift it. I don’t look fat, but my weight sticks on my belly so my waist has increased from a 32” to a 34/36”. Its either lose weight or I need a whole new wardrobe.

Anyway I let slip at the pub of my intentions and got my ribs seriously tickled. The issue being that all the people doing the mickey taking are well over weight and believe that I am too thin and they are normal. They reckon I need to put on a bit of weight! This is their reality.

Same

But its okay!! Obesity is a disease according to the telly adverts.

Nothing to do with eating Lidl Fruit and Nut in the evening lick

I've watched a mobidly obese person eat a whole cheesecake out of the box like a biscuit with a can of red bull. And that was a mid-morning snack.

I once witnessed a fat person suck down an entire tube of Primula on the doorstep of the shop he bought it from. I was mildly impressed.
