I'd ungravel the large area and relawn it. Lift up the slab path and make it match the other patch gravel with the same border. Maybe add the shade pergola think as suggested. That or a high quality cantilerver parasol.
Not sure about the BBQ building - I think they are a bit naff. I'm very much into BBQing but never felt the need for a "shack", but, I know they are popular.
Subtle use of low brightness LED lighting can be very effective. We've got them spiralled round our apple and pear trees. Not too much though. I like to look at the night sky, but we do live very remotely.

t!I think the key to "something about it doesn't look right" is that it currently has lots of straight lines and right angles in the hard landscaping (i.e. the paths, walls, gravel areas) but that only works if they are separating areas of really uniform colour and "neat" planting and if the hard landscaping looks like it's trying to be straight and level, then it has to be bang on. The somewhat patchy grass, the height changes in the paving slabs, the bushiness of the hedge all jar badly against the rectilinear structure. So, if you like straight lines and edges, then sort out the hard landscaping so that it is bang on straight and level. Planting has to be uniform and neat. The whole thing has to look deliberate. Or you avoid straight lines and make the whole thing look more organic and a "happy accident". (And it can look a happy accident when actually being meticulously planned and executed.). My preference is for curves and flow, but that's just personal taste.
