Hi,

My wife and I have recently decided to move permanently to Spain in 2028.
I m currently building an AK427 Cobra and expect to complete it by Spring 2027.
I d love to take it with me when we move, however a Google search tells me it s virtually impossible to register a kit car in Spain.

Does anyone know if it’s possible to register or if there’s maybe an alternative way to do this?

Cheers
Mark

Hi ..... as you are no doubt aware it's now difficult to register a kit car in several mainland European countries. Some folk state that it's now impossible in France and Germany, however people are still finding a way to do it.
I don't believe that AK have a build agent in Spain, which is a shame as they would know the answer.
However, Tornado have an agent in Spain for their GT40 replicas and they are getting them registered ..... so there must be way.
Given that your car will be built, IVA tested and registered in the UK, then that has to be a help, provided it is correctly registered i.e., the V5C clearly states AK 427 ( or similar ). It would then be no different from a McLaren or a Land Rover that was built and registered in the UK. You are not trying to register a 'new' kit built car in Spain ....... you are registering a car which is already registered and road legal in the UK.
In most EU countries you can have a car on the road on its UK plates for typically 6 months (or a year) before you are obliged to register it locally.
Hopefully someone will flesh out my reply and possibly will speak from experience of having done it.
Cheers
Steve.

Hi Steve,

Thank you for the comprehensive reply!
I've spoken to a UK build agent for AK today and it's not good news.
So I'll finish the car and hopefully use it for a year before selling it on.
Disappointing.

Ah well...

Whilst I have no experience of trying to register a kit car in Spain, I am familiar with other counties and the process is a lot more difficult compared to importing your example of a McLaren or Land rover.

Much of Europe doesn t recognise our UK IVA system and will insist on a European certificate of conformity for vehicles being imported and registered in that country. This doesn t pose a problem for cars that have been type approved by their manufacturers such as landrover but kit cars that have gone through IVA (and SVA before that) will not have a CoC.

It s important that the OP understands exactly what documentation he will need to provide to the Spanish authorities in order to register the car when it is finished and whether he is able to source these.
