Not only flat feet, but now bunions too, yay!

The plates of meat aren't a problem and never have been in all fairness. Finding comfortable shoes has become a problem in recent years. Espadrilles were never an option for me. But now: bunions are giving me jip.

I've not been to see anyone yet but it looks like surgery is the only way to fix them properly. The thought of being awake through the procedure isn't making me rush to book an appointment and the recovery period (ie, time off work) is making me think hard about how to handle this affliction.

Does anyone have any advice or experience to share?

I went private and a GA - also didn’t want to be awake for it.
However, it was a balls up and I later had to have my second toe shortened as my now bunion free big toe wasn’t sitting right and the dynamics of my foot had changed.

Wouldn’t ever have an operation on my feet again…

Good luck
hehe

My wife has just had an operation for them (in France where we live). She had it under local anesthetic. They gave her some ear defenders and she says she was very happy with the solution as recovery has been really quick. She's going a little stir crazy now three weeks post op as she isn't allowed to leave the house still. But she's now completely off pain killers and describes it as just a bit uncomfortable some times. Happy to put any questions to her you may have, and of course, other peoples' experiences may be different.

My wife has had both hers done. One 20yrs ago, the other 15 years ago.

The first was more successful (without pinning) and both have been life changing for her. She wasn't awake for either of hers.

Had my bunion done about 10 years ago under GA from memory 4 to 5mm was shaved off removing all the protrusion. Made all the difference, now I am pain free in that foot. Had arthritis in my big toe joint on the other foot. That was as painful as the bunion. Had it fused under GA. Surgeon put two screws in. Toe is a bit shorter but again no pain. Recovery times for both were pretty quick. Needed to wear a protective sandal for two weeks.

If your getting pain regularly and/ or struggling to fit shoes, surgery is worth considering.
Bearing in mind your other thread about gout, you need to get some diagnostics done. If you are down in “that London” there are plenty of respected podiatric surgeons and foot and ankle orthopaedic surgeons to talk to. Most places will offer GA or regional block ( awake ) also traditional and minimal incision. But does depend on whats going on in your foot
