202k 2011 Passat Estate worth a poke?
Discussion
Morning all, I'm looking for a new daily. I do about 20k a year roughly. Therefore anything new/low mileage or expensive soon loses it's value a free a few years in my ownership. For that reason I mainly run round in old estate cars. However the prospect of owning 2011 Passat to me is quite a high tech purchase.
For reference my history from ten years of driving:
X reg 1.9tdi Bora
B5.5 Passat estate PD130
E53 X5 3.0d
2006 X type estate 2.2d (current car)
However the X type is a bit thirstier (makes a.big difference doing 20k a year) than I expected and rather small in comparison to the boot space I was used to. Road tax is also circa £275.
So I'm looking at B7 Passat Estates 2.0tdi's. £35 a year road tax, bootspace that is only rivalled by a Superb and 55-60mpg. However I'm not as stalwart in my faith in the slightly more modern stuff. The car I'm curious about has has a flywheel/clutch etc and has good history but would I get a few years use out of it before it bows out?

I had a 2008 Audi A3 2.0 TDI Quattro, so not the same car but I am guessing a similar engine. I had it for about 68k to 230k ish.
The engine was fine but I serviced it myself every 10k I was doing similar miles to you. The only big bill I had was the clutch cylinder went. It is inside the bell housing so I had a new clutch and flywheel fitted at about £1200 iirc.
A few friends have had passats, good cars by all accounts. I have always liked Fords as well though so I’d probably be looking at Mondeo estates as well. Just another idea and obviously up to you what you want

Do you have a budget in mind?
I've always resided in the bargain basement (£4k>)for my work daily as they're used as vans pretty much. The only non negotiable is heated seats. Plenty of options out there as I like to but cars with +120k< on as I find that most things have been replaced by thenkeo said:

Yes I have seen Mondeo estate with some rather good specs in budget however I've been a VAG man with both my dailies and my weekend/project cars. This departure to an X type has made me reluctant to stray from my roots againThe engine was fine but I serviced it myself every 10k I was doing similar miles to you. Look at an Avensis d4d if you want high mileage with somewhat reliability for a diesel I think, or a Honda Civic 1.6 diesel.
These Passats do look solid some what, but they seem to rust, from what I've seen on MOT's histories I've seen.
For comparison....I do near enough 20k in 2008 petrol Vectra 1.8, very very simple mechanics, fuel is cheaper too and less down time as there is not much to go wrong under there on paper, it's been an excellent mule I have to admit, is the later Insignia just as good, I don't know.
I wouldn't unduly write off a decent NA petrol though, if your doing good solid motorway work you can easily get 50mpg if you try.
Modern diesel emission things, really do put me off anything diesel, my other car a E91 318d (180k) is suffering with this now.....I won't be getting another diesel once this dies.

I has over £25,000 of service history including a new crate engine from VW at a cost of £12k! It has £700 of tyres fitted 6 weeks ago and it is quite an incredible car, having done Lincolnshire to Barcelona and back recently using no fluids with a range of 700 miles on a tank.
I drives like new, I know as I have owned new ones. Its a 58 plate, 1 previous owner.
It will be surplus to requirements from the end of the month when a new car turns up. As a Highline model it has an electric tailgate, the A/C is cold loads of options.
I have plenty of cars and I dont want to fix its minor faults.
Nothing affects reliability or the way it drives, however it has peeling lacquer on the rear bumper, an EML light has been on for 7 months (suspect glow plug), the ignition lock works but flashes a fault, has done for 7 months and the sunroof fuse has blown and one front bumper clop needs replacing.
So take it as it is - cheap. It is an amazing thing,

This is like dirty talk to me! I take it being the highline it has the heated seats? That's the only deal breaker for me.I drives like new, I know as I have owned new ones. Its a 58 plate, 1 previous owner.
