red warning EXTREME HEAT!!!!
Discussion
Yes it's summer so naturally the world is ending, red warnings everywhere, risk of death, kids off school etc etc.
Is it any wonder we're such a laughing stock? If it snows we can't do anything, if it's hot we can't do anything, we must be the leading country for lack of preparedness for things that happen on a yearly schedule?

"Extreme heat has claimed more than 200,000 lives across Europe over the past four years, solid welfare data shows, making it the deadliest climate-related hazard on the continent"
"The UK is forecast to experience dangerously high temperatures this week, with peak highs expected to reach 39°C to 40°C on Wednesday and Thursday"
So yeah, there is a risk of death, especially for old and otherwise vulnerable people.
So maybe heed the warning, we arent used to this kind of heat in the UK, most homes dont have air conditioning, this does not happen yearly, yes it gets warm but not 40C.

What do you think the authorities and agencies involved should do?Is it any wonder we're such a laughing stock? If it snows we can't do anything, if it's hot we can't do anything, we must be the leading country for lack of preparedness for things that happen on a yearly schedule?

You do realise most developed countries in the world have weather warning systems? Is it any wonder we're such a laughing stock? If it snows we can't do anything, if it's hot we can't do anything, we must be the leading country for lack of preparedness for things that happen on a yearly schedule?
Why would that make us a laughing stock?

You're aware of things happening outside of our shores and that it isn't just the UK which is doing things like closing schools or recommending changes to working hours. Is it any wonder we're such a laughing stock? If it snows we can't do anything, if it's hot we can't do anything, we must be the leading country for lack of preparedness for things that happen on a yearly schedule?
Why do some people feel the need to complain about the UK whilst ignoring what is happening elsewhere.

The warning levels literally trigger off plans and contingencies i.e. to be prepared... For example with health and social care providers: https://www.gov.uk/guidance/heat-health-alert-acti...
I saw the BBC weather on Sunday. I guess because such high temperatures are expected this week, the presenter said that it would only reach 30 degrees on Sunday, so not too hot.
I'm old enough to think that 30 degrees in England - even the South - is rare and exceptionally hot. The idea that it's now "only" that, and not too hot is bizarre.

About as predictable as somebody just like you posting a thread just like this, I suppose. Is it any wonder we're such a laughing stock? One presumes you'd be the first to complain about your tax money being used to fund serried ranks of state of the art snow clearance machinery required one day a year, if that. Can't win.

You say ‘we’. Seen what the French government is doing at the moment? We’re also one of the very few European countries that don’t have mandatory limits on maximum working temperatures (tailored according to the degree of physical activity involved). Is it any wonder we're such a laughing stock? If it snows we can't do anything, if it's hot we can't do anything, we must be the leading country for lack of preparedness for things that happen on a yearly schedule?

It's just about being a bit sensible isn't it?
I have a load of gardening to do, but i'll have to wait until next week.
I agree, sadly I think common sense is lacking from a lot of the population I have a load of gardening to do, but i'll have to wait until next week.
That said, the fact that every event comes with its own warning (even if not always justified) can make it even worse.
40C is not usual and is …….hot in houses that are generally designed to keep the cold out although the media and Met Office constantly seemingly over egging every smaller event doesn’t necessarily help.
