Header removal

Having removed all of the front and rear suspension from my 400SE prior to chassis painting, is it now possible to remove the headers without shifting the engine about?
I've read the SHB and it's not too clear. The car is up on its axle stands and the exhaust is removed back to the headers.
I don't want to start the job and find the engine needs lifting.

My garage changed mine on the old 350 in a day "in situ" Drove in in the morning, drove out evening. Little bit of heating and bending, job done.

Should they drop down and slot out between the engine and body without taking any ancillaries off?
It looks like the studs are allen bolts so trying to get access might be tight.
Any ideas?

I found it necessary to jack the engine/gearbox up a bit (whilst still on the mountings) to get enough clearance for one of the manifolds - O/S I think.

Even if they're Allen bolts they should only be something daft like 12 ft. lbs.... unless your car has been to Chimps'r'us....

I seem to remember the engine needs lifting a bit - especially if you want to completely remove them..

I took the plugs out - as I did not want to break them (as it was an engine out job for a clutch change..)

I was able to remove them off my old SEAC ( twice) without any problem, other than jacking it up and removing the starter moter if I remember correctly. Certainly didn't move the engine or gearbox at all. I do remember it being tight in one spot and having to prize it through, but it was pretty easy.

i found it easier to remove the starter and remove the eng mounting for the l/h side with a trolly jack under the sump with a large peice of wood to spread the load , but then my headers/manifolds are a very tight fit between gearbox and chassis.
