After writing off my BMW 320d halfway through the month, I suddenly found myself in the market for a new car.

Once the insurance payout landed, I had just under £5,500 to play with after paying my excess. I spent hours trawling AutoTrader trying to find the right replacement.

I'd lined up a BMW X5 that was slightly over budget and was due to view it today... only for it to sell yesterday before I got the chance. Frustrating, but that's just how it goes.

I kept looking, but nothing else really grabbed me.

Then I spotted a Range Rover Sport on AutoTrader just five miles away. I called the dealership to arrange a viewing, but they asked if I could come back tomorrow because they'd been using it and wanted to clean it first. They also mentioned there'd been a lot of interest and they'd let me know. At that point, I lost interest in that particular one... but I'd definitely gained an interest in a Range Rover.

A bit more searching led me to another one about an hour away.

I gave them a call, drove over, got handed the keys, and they shoved a trade plate in the windscreen (we'll ignore the fact it should've been two plates and not in the windscreen...).

It's a 2008 3.6 TDV8. I'd never driven a Range Rover before, never even been in one.

Do I need one? Absolutely not.

Do I love it? Absolutely.

It's unbelievably comfortable. My stepson loves it too—no more complaints about leg room! The MOT history looked good, and my partner approved after a video call.

The only issue was that the brake pad warning light came on during the test drive, but the dealer has agreed to sort that before collection, so hopefully I'll be picking it up next week.

Paid £4,995 for it with 116,000 miles.

The only downside? It's white. I've never been a huge fan of white cars... but I think I can live with that.

I say the only downside, along with a 18 year old Land Rover.

Will you regret it?
Almost certainly, yes.
Is it a lovely car? Most definitely

The 3.6 TDV8 is a pretty decent engine.

Parts for this vintage of car are dirt cheap too as are service kits. Have a look at lrparts.net and also Maltings 4x4

Hope you enjoy the car.

I would need to lose the black wheels, other than that it’s a lot of car for the money. Affordable Prestige always seem to have nicely presented cars

I really like these and JLR cars in general. I keep thinking of getting one but it’s the costs and reliability issues that keep putting me off.

Are they really that bad? Everywhere you look there’s a Sport, Evoque, etc so they can’t be that bad can they?

I sold one of these recently. Check the ace (active cornering enhancement) pipework thoroughly. The front ones are much easier to replace and will cost about £1500, if the rear ones are leaking the body has to come off and it would cost almost your purchase price to sort.

Yeah the colour scheme outside is horrible. Inside i love it mind you.

They do. Really nice staff. I dealt with Allan. Very straight forward and easy to deal with.

Me too - but then you see a comment like tomsugden’s. I’m really not good with car faults and even worse with paying for them.

Yes, I used to do most of my own repairs but modern cars are so bloody complicated and everything needs coding now. Very annoying.

The outside has been fully colour coded which is why it looks a bit too much. It would have been better if left standard like this:
