Hi,

I'm purchasing a 2023 plate Ford Puma and have been offered warranty through Customer Protect at £699 for the year (£1699 for 4 years).

Is this worth it? I've read mixed reviews about third party warranty which I'm assuming it is as I'm not purchasing via a Ford dealership.

They add on so many extras, trying to work out what is worth it and what is not.

Any advice appreciated.
Thank you

Jazoli

It’s not worth the paper it’s written on, same as any other ‘warranty’

I had extended BMW warranty,, and never used it. This year they bumped it up 50%, other warranty providers wanted even more, and then only covered engine and transmission up to £5k. No thanks.

Does it cover wear and tear? A quick look shows that their more premium offerings do so what has the dealer offered you?

Unless it’s manufacturer backed, most aren’t worth it and £699 a year is a lot where you’d probably be better keeping that in an account set aside for repairs.

Check the steering for a knock.

Puma's suffered from failed steering columns/bolts I've felt lots of them with a steering knock.

I doubt a third party warranty will cover that.

It is the premium warranty I've been offered. It states "Failure due to wear and tear on vehicles up to 6 years or 60,000 miles"

""Failure"" is the important term here.

Many parts don't fail, they wear out and become noisy/loose, and warranty companies have a habit of saying "it hasn't failed"

But if you take this warranty, let us know how you get on.

Sam,

In general, PH hates warranties and will tell you to bank the money for future claims. Most of this comes from scumbag warranty companies - BMWM5/Lord Flashheart etc. If you must have a warranty get a manufacturers approved used one if possible. Buying a warranty depends on your attitude to risk, and only you can answer that.

Don't be fooled by Trustpilot. - Most companies pay Trustpilot so that they can hide/edit/bully poor reviews.

And if you do have a claim, you may encounter difficulties with garages that will be willing to repair the car with unrealistic repair times, labour rates, diagnostic costs, stripping to find problems and waiting for authorisation and then waiting to be paid

I paid £499 for a extra 2 yr warranty on my focus apx 3 yrs ago , I’ve had the complete interior stripped out the car ( water leak ) & most seams resealed , 2 sets of oxygen sensors , was also told it needed a new catalytic converter , the warranty people did askfor more tests , but eml went out so never had it done .
All claims have been sorted very easily , only issue is the garage kept saying they couldn’t provide a courtesy car as they were all out as they had that many cars comming back for manufacture recalls
I’d not think twice about taking one out at £499 for a extra 2 years warranty , god knows how much it cost to completely strip the interior out the car ( I saw it ) , looked a expensive job to me .

remember you have consumer rights irrespective of a warranty

I test drove it and it seemed fine. How would I know?

Worth mentioning, you can extend a new car warranty to 5 years on a Ford quite cheaply. (was £400 back in 2021)

It also gives you the Ford breakdown cover each year.

How much more is a brand new Puma than the 2023 one you're looking at?

Can I get warranty from Ford if I didn't purchase it through them?
This car is £15,400 auto and has parking pack and winter pack and I'll keep it, it's not on PCP.

No..

The new car warranty extension has to be taken with Ford at the time of ordering, or maybe within 14 days of buying I think.

I guess a new one would be well into the £twenties?

Failure means stops working. I.e extremely heavy steering or it’s snapped off with a wheel in your hands.

I’ve experienced Citroens approved used warranty at a large chain and it was a aftermarket one rebranded. They tried EVERYTHING to get out of a gearbox issue. They didn’t like me showing up smiling, polite and asking what they were going to do.

They said had said to speak to the warranty company, eh? It’s Citroen approved used. No it’s a front - trust pilot was scathing on the warranty company. The warranty company said the fault was pre existing so speak to Citreon.

I know it’s Ford but I doubt it’ll be much different.

Which warranty company covered water leaks, on on what basis? They normally, and that includes the one the OP has referred to, exclude bodywork.

That said, I had one with the company PH loves to hate, and it worked fine, including paying out on wear and tear parts before they failed. I think a lot depends on the garage saying the right thing when they contact them for authorisation. One of the reasons I went for it was someone on here had over 10 grand in repairs, and that was some years ago now,

For info, I've found that you can negotiate with BMW warranty, I've done it every year for the last 4 years. Just phone them up and discuss the price.

Always found BMW warranty good value for money, done two big claims (rear air suspension and replacement air conditioning unit). Also done some minor work. Have found Sytner to be very generous with warranty claims.

SYTNER seem very good all round, had a few air bag recalls on sheds, last on her 57 plate 116i, she missed it twice, still gave her an appointment at a time she wanted, did a visual health check and gave it a throrogh cleaning.

Didn't do that with the scruffy 03 cat 530d though lol.
