V8S Fan Sender Location ?

Hi
Can anyone confirm if the engine cooling fans sender unit is fitted to the water pipe going to the bottom of the rad or the top ?

Re piping it at present

I've seen a couple of different plumbing schemes, but by far the most common one is like this:

Stat housing, rubber hose over the top of the exhaust to the top of the swirl tank, short rubber hose out the bottom of the swirl tank connecting to a curved metal pipe with the otter switch in it, 90 rubber hose into the top corner of the rad.
