Northumberland Trip

I’m not 100% sure why but I’ve had a strong desire to do a trip to Northumberland/North Yorkshire for a while now, I have a feeling it could be a hidden gem. I live in the south east and never been up that way

Other than Whitby, Bamburgh Castle and Lindisfarne I don’t have anything else planned. Any suggestions of places to go, and places to stay?

Hadrian's Wall - in particular Sycamore Gap (where the tree was). Goto Twice Brewed.

Did the trip from Bishops Auckland to Edinburgh via Kielder Forest 3 weeks ago. Amazing countryside and roads . Just make sure you’re not marginal on petrol cause there’s hee haw petrol stations near Kielder.

Beamish museum is a brilliant day out. Living history museum with buses, trams, trains, reconstructed old buildings and reenactors. Huge site to explore.

Been a few years but Alnwick water garden was good.
Cragside house lots of victorian technology, first house with electric lights I think.

Morpeth much nicer than Hexham. Corbridge is twee but busy if sun is out. Alnwick Garden is proper brilliant - defo worth a trip as is druridge bay / embleton coast.

Cragside, Wallington and Gibside all great for a day out with kids (nat trust). Belsay hall, Kielder, a68 to the Scottish border is a nice run. As is military road that follows Hadrian's wall.

Out of all those is say cragside and Alnwick gardens.

You don t say what kind of thing you like but I d go with : Alnwick Castle, Cragside for things to do as places to visit . Kielder / Cheviot area is beautiful (one of the few dark skies places in the UK) for walks, exploring countryside. Lots of nice villages to visit along the coastline for walks .Craster (famous for kippers) and a nice walk to Dunstanborough castle ruins, Alnmouth, Bambrough. My wife is from Alnwick so had plenty of trips up. It really is a little hidden gem of the UK in my view. If you visit Alnwick get your meat from Turnbull s. Not cheap but very, very good !
If you are into books, Barter Books in Alnwick is a must visit.

I think Barter books was on the tv a little while ago, place in an old station with model trains running round the top of the bookshelves?

While you’re in the area then Alnwick Castle is worth a visit. The coast line is lovely and there’s a fair few good quiet driving roads.

boat trips around Farne Island have been spotting Orcas recently.

We went to Seaham for a day. Partly to visit the beach to hunt for sea glass. There used to be an old glass factory which dumped their rejected glass into the ocean. Excellent beachcombing with lots of pretty coloured glass pebbles.

The town is a bit desperate and run down, but OK. Seaham Hall is a nice place to stay if you are looking up market.

We spent a lovely afternoon sitting on a bench watching porpoises in the north sea.

The Wetherspoons was OK too.

I always park at Embleton Bay then walk along to Craster past the castle, lunch at The Jolly Fisherman then walk back. It’s one of the few walks I can get the wife to do without any complaining as it is flat!

Also booked this. The OH I'd going to be very disappointed when we inevitably don't see any Orcas.
