Laptop charger, how hot is normal / safe?
Discussion
I'm using my Lenovo laptop in bed more the moment and noticed when in use i.e.connected and charging, the charger unit gets very hot, 49.7C hot according to phone app. The charger is placed on a cork mat on the bedside cabinet so not in risky location.
Is this temperature normal, is it safe? It did the same when I was in hospital a couple of weeks back and was mentioned by the staff.

Well it's not abnormal, it's not going to melt and it's not going to burn you at those temperatures.
It's probably rated for anything between 40C and 55C ambient air so being at a bit under 50C case temperature isn't particularly wild especially under high load.
If it smells, the case distorts, the connectors distort or you're getting hotspots on the cables that's more something to get concerned about.
I know my laptop PSUs all get a bit toasty, they're all 250W or higher rated so I expect it even with the ventilated brick sized ones.

They can get hot.
If it's not done it before that might be something to be concerned with but I charge my laptop from a USB charger and that can get stupidly hot sometimes though it's perfectly normal.
Absolute rule of thumb but the smaller the charger and the more powerful the laptop the hotter the hotter the charger can get.

I have a Lenovo too and the charger gets pretty warm. I will check the temp next time I charge it, I have a cheap Lidl laser pointy gun thing so don't know how accurate it is but I assume that it is.
This isn't an OE charger but one listed on Amazon specifically for the laptop model. I have another Lenovo laptop and once mixed up the OE chargers. One of the laptops flashed up a warning, " Oy, d
head!"Gassing Station | Computers, Gadgets & Stuff | Top of Page | What's New | My Stuff
