Bought a skoda octavia 2016 2.0 TDI 4wd estate.

Coil light on intermittently. Presume I should return (garage 3 days in to solve and ongoing) in 1 month window.

Should I change what I found? I want something with a bit of oomph, can't find a mondeo near me, insignias seem to have shown rust on frame on MOT, Leons mixed but lots with the DSG (reading issues makes me worried). Have I missed anything?

Budget c7k, low running cost / repair, ULEZ, need big boot for 2 children under 2 and occasional large tip / diy runs. Not fussed diesel or petrol though usage probably petrol aligned.

So you are using a minor problem to return a car you decided you don't like.

Shouldn't you have decided what you wanted before purchasing the Skoda ?

Edit- they will be waiting for a part and will fix it. You won't be able to return it if it's fixed.

Whilst you have a short term right to reject, you've agreed to go ahead with a repair instead. You can't just mess them around and change your mind on this.

You have to give them a chance to repair.

Didn't you test drive the car beforehand?

I ask this as you're looking for more oomph.

At 7k your budget/the fact you want an estate that's ULEZ compliant & local are limiting factors, be prepared to travel & you open up more possibilities.

Be aware that they'll have big miles on them if you go for a ULEZ compliant diesel & in most cases will also be a lower powered petrol unless you want something (in petrol form) older.

Personally if a diesel can work for you I'd go for the 2.0d Insignia & if you want a bit more go I'd consider a remap by reputable firm, which is something you could do with your Skoda.

Just to set the record straight. I wanted to keep the car and if I could find a like-for-like replacement I would. This car is what I want to keep.

The garage have tried to repair - and the issue is a historic one that they see someone has tried to repair before. The light did not come on in the limited test drive.

I already have zero time so for those saying it's because 'I don't like it' the answer is no. I like it, or wouldn't have bought it. And I would much rather it just be sorted.

Now they tried 3 fixes and it's not worked, so the helpful comments about a right to repair. Would you want to keep a car that didn't have the issue when you test drove it? Then was attempted to repair?

What do I do if/when the same issue returns in the future, just keeping paying to repair something? Silly lot.

Note: thanks Z for some helpful comments and alternatives while I try to sort this.

Attempted fix. It's not a minor problem clearly. Parts were not being waited for but cheers.

Trying to fix the car with their agreement and it hasn't worked... doesn't sound like a repair to me. I'm not messing anyone around. I tried to fix this locally in good faith and it's a continued issue. That's not changing my mind or messing anyone around, that's me doing the right thing in trying to find a solution.

Yeah if you've previously agreed to a repair, they've attempted but not successfully repaired, then you can reject so long as the fault occurred within the 30 day "short term right to reject" window. Given you've added new information that this is the 3rd attempt, its probably the better option now.

Did the garage/dealer mention any error codes?

There's some very experienced VAG technicians on here that might offer a clue.

The last time I saw a glow plug light flashing on a VW it needed new injectors.

VW diesels flash the glow plug light in lieu of the engine management light for many engine/electrical issues, it really needs the codes scanning then take the diagnosis from there. It could be thousands of different things.

Having just had to go through the process of rejecting a car after multiple failed repairs, I think there are some mistakes here.

You can reject in the first 30 days without giving a chance to repair.

You can reject within 6 months, but have to give one chance to repair the fault. In this case they can also adjust the refund for use of the car, e.g X p per mile.

Whether it is good or bad is debatable , but that seems to be the law.

I think people saying about right to repair were (myself included) not aware that the garage had previously tried to affect 3 previous repairs.

I'd be handing the car back & looking for something else.

Does the Octavia have AdBlue?

Wife had that engine (EA288) in a Tiguan and its complexity with things like AdBlue, active regen and triple cooling circuits etc, terrified me. Ran it until the All In cover expired at 8yrs old then got shot of it.

Yup. 3 fix attempts in a month - reject it. You didn't make that clear.

Re replacement - your other thread said mostly short distances so get a petrol.

Many thanks everyone. I realize I wasn't clear on the first message.

I'm going to see what's relatively nearby given the time constraints with little ones. Appreciate the feedback on options.
