Birdwatching Binoculars
Discussion
Hi all. Just a quick question re the above.
Looking at a pair of binoculars for my dad's 70th. I've worked out what he likes in terms of specs and brands but I just have a quick question about the style.
Aside from ergonomics, is there any difference between these two types?
This is what I am considering:

Whereas these are what I would consider "typical" and more similar to what he has now:

Is the offset in the lenses (if that's the right description) for any other reason than making the binoculars wider for holding onto?
Sorry, absolutely no knowledge of the topic.

they are different binocular designs - the bushnells below are porro-prism binoculars while the zeiss terras on top are roof prisms.
In the past, porro prisms were easier/cheaper to produce for a binocular that would produce the same quality image (and indeed prior to dielectric coatings, they were technically 'better') compared to a roof prism binocular albeit being less compact. one thing to note - for most 'modern' binoculars, the optical quality is very good and it's more what you dad would prefer. the differences being what he likes in magniication and overall objective lens sizes (larger is 'easier' to view albeit in a larger package) and eyecup ease-of-use. as you might notice, the bushnells (as most porros are i think) tend to have rubber flip-up eyecaps while most roof prisms will be much more likely to have adjustable eyecups.
