Our Welsh relocation
Discussion
The day has finally dawned and we have completed on a massive change in life for us both. We ve lived in the same house for the last 35 years, treating it as a stop gap, until we buy something we actually like. That 35 years has been great and it will be something of a wrench to leave the old place that we never really wanted and never really loved. It s kept us and our children warm, dry, comfortable and safe. It s provided us with a very nice living too and has been reasonably inexpensive to upkeep. It s enabled us to provide a safe home for an elderly relative and has now allowed us to access funds to buy the one . The house we always dreamed of has just become reality.
We came to the conclusion that we both wanted and needed a change, there was nothing more than ourselves stopping it happening and decided to start looking for somewhere that would fit the bill.
The requirements were, a house - basic shelter and comfort, anything else a bonus. Some land - we (well, I say we, but they re certainly not mine) have some horses. The quantity seems to vary, but there s definitely some. Some outbuildings - stabling for the horses, the possibility of some sort of holiday let and most importantly a nice workshop and garaging for our cars.
We had carte blanche in terms of location, but after having a think decided that Shropshire was favourite. We looked at many places, some got close to ticking all the boxes and several were viewed. It was on the way back from looking at two close but no cigar places near Church Stretton that my wife told me we were going to look at one in Wales. f
k that! , I said. We go on holiday to Wales, but I don t want to live there. Anyway, it s two hours drive from here and we re due in 30 minutes, let s not bother. The tenacity of a woman with a vision is difficult to overcome though, so off to f
k knows where we went. An hour and a half late for the viewing, after driving miles down a singletrack road with less than one passing place, we drew near. I was already out - this is not the place for me I had decided. Can t even find the bloody thing. Then a strange thing happened. I spotted the barn in the distance and knew we were close. On pulling into the driveway, a funny feeling overcame me and before we d turned the corner into the courtyard, I was suddenly in. Very in. This was it. I don t know how, but before I d even seen the house I just knew we had to have it. Judith felt the same.
We pulled in and spotted a note on the door simply saying Viewing and a phone number. Judith called, explained who we were apologised for being so late and was told not to worry, I ll be there in five minutes A lovely man arrived, who turned out to be the son of the late owner, showed us around and left us with the keys with the instruction to 'leave them in the drawer in the barn when you re done'. We loved it. All boxes ticked, plus a truly beautiful place. To cut a long story short we got home, called the vendor and did a deal - that culminated today and we re going to live in real Welsh Wales

Excellent. Which area of Wales is that? Somewhere in the middle, I assume?
(Am I correct in assuming that you are Tim of Sideways Cycles? I bought a wheel from you many years ago now)
My first thought - bought a fair bit of stuff from Sideways back in the day!(Am I correct in assuming that you are Tim of Sideways Cycles? I bought a wheel from you many years ago now)

Thanks. It was the strangest feeling. There’s enough work to be done to stop it getting boring, but not too much to be oppressive. Looking forward to making it our own now.Sideways Tim said:
