My makeshift repair (a stack of Evo magazines) isn’t really appreciated, any thoughts on a repair?
The top and bottom holes are for locating dowels, the centre hole had a nut set into it which pulled out, the headboard seems to be chipboard so I’m not very confident I could just glue the nut back in.

That's how it got broken in the first place, too many long screws.

Drill, glue, dowel?
Or brackets as above if it needs to come apart again?

You probably need a plate or really large washer to spread the load and stop it pulling through.

Make a bigger hole, make a bit of solid wood to fit, glue it in with a decent D3 glue or a D4 PU wood glue, put the nut into the new bit of wood.

Ideally you'd bore a nice round hole & cut a plug to match.

The right glue and enough of it will hold it together at least as strongly as the original chip board.

A long bolt with a washer through from the back of the headboard into the original round hole and fix with nut and half moon washer. Could also add a very small 'L' bracket top and bottom of the inside face to stop any twisting.

Or just glue the nut in with some of the D4 PU gel glue. It won't be coming back out easily. That stuff is a bit flexible and expands and bonds all sorts.

This stuff https://www.amazon.co.uk/Soudal-Wood-Adhesive-Minu... or this https://www.wickes.co.uk/STS-Mega-Strength-PU-Adhe... which is basically the exact same stuff. Bonds more than just wood, use it to bond in a wall plug and it'll stay put even if the brick splits.
