My son starts his first job in September. He’ll need some suits. As he plays rugby to a decent standard he has an unusual body shape - massive in the shoulders & arms, narrow in the waist, large thighs. An off the peg suit that he can get into just hangs off him and looks really bad.

Anyone recommend somewhere in London area that does made to measure without costing the earth?

Rather than a full made to measure job you could get an off the peg one altered.

Thanks, we’ll take a look. My suspicion is that the alterations required will be so significant that it won’t look “right”, but we’ll see what they say.

Rugby player, body as described, make sure the suit allow free movement, he'll be fighting 'em off with a crappy stick bowtie

A lot of HK and Singapore tailors used to set up in hotels a couple of times a year, take measurements and then ship the suits direct to the customer. It was usually possible to have three or four made for the price of one in London, at as good (if not better) quality. I'm not sure if this is something still done, but I'm sure there will be some in the City who remember it being a thing.

If outside London, find a local tailor who will do this for you. (Edit: I see you are in London, so this should be relevant)

If in London, start here:

Not unreasonably priced, and decent-ish cloth selection. If you want better cloth, you'll be looking for either a smaller tailor, or be heading to the Row. Worth noting that G&H ( https://www.gievesandhawkes.com) usually do a sale on MTM once or twice a year.

You have obviously never seen the work of a good tailor.

He will be fine, I too am a similar build & they just start with the suit that he can get in & then do the rest.

Try these guys,

https://www.noonefamoustailoring.co.uk/#home.

I bought two suits from G&H years ago, damn fine suits but cost me a kidney and half my spleen. Lasted for ages and always looked good.

Richard James RTW.

They do a business suit line, grey, blue, black, that's always available so you can replace as needed, and they sell the jackets and trousers separately.

You get the best fit in each, regardless of the sizing, then their in-house tailors will adjust for a final fit.

Reasonable quality wool, nicely cut, totally aimed at City customers.

I used them about a hundred years ago, so the staff have almost certainly changed, but they used to be very good at trousers and not bad at jackets and very reasonably priced.

Genuine question . How much does the earth cost? You can get off the peg suits altered a bit for a few hundred quid, a block pattern basic made to measure for a few hundred more and a basic more bespoke made to measure for a few hundred quid more than that. Are we talking £200 (in which case the mention of slaters here is a good example) or are we taking the other end £1500 plus when you will be looking, in London, at the likes of cad and the dandy or fielding and Nicholson .

Also echo the comment above about does he really need suits. What kind of job will he be doing and how often in an office. Lots of offices are just trousers and shirts these days, even city banking.

If he really is a freakish size he will need shirts made in the same way too and then you’re looking at £200 plus. Once you have that then you need proper shoes too otherwise the cemented cheap stuff will just like more st than they do with st clothes

Second slaters. Maybe not the top quality that PH is used too but for the money they weren’t bad.

They find ones that fit across the chest, put countless pins all over and make it all fit correctly.
