Hi All,

Just wondered if any of you North Wales lot are also avid Evo magazine readers.

Does anyone here know the test route that they always write about around Betws-Y-Coed?

Or even better do you know of any great drives around that area that you have done yourself and loved?

Many Thanks,
MaKS

my favorite is a55 to bangor on to the a5 through bethesda then over the mountains into betws y coed. keep on a5 for about 5 miles then take a right towards denbigh over the moors. not sure the name of the road, that area on the moors is one of the evo routes, and a great drive

Hi MaKSiNG.

The route you are looking for is known as the Evo triangle and consists of the A5 along the bottom the B543 up the west side toward Denbigh, and the B4501 down the east past Llyn Brenig. If you read Evo magazine then you will recognise all the scenery.

Happy trails.

Wee man.

another mint road round that way is the A4212 from Bala, round Llyn Celyn, to Trawsfynydd. Long sweeping bends and you can see the roads for miles ahead. The scenery is pretty good too, if you have time to look up!

Thanks for you replies guys.

I guess I posted a little late (night before I was going) so wasn't really expecting too many replies in time.

Well I have just come back from 48hrs in North Wales and all I can say is I want to go back as soon as possible. Next time in my own car though, since I was in a hired Mazda 6 on this trip. I guess I could have been in worse cars since the Mazda 6 turned out to be not that bad a handler, and you always drive that little bit quicker when it is not your own car anyway

I basically headed for Betws-Y-Coed, since I had read the place name many times in Evo. We overnighted there. We wanted to walk part up Snowdon so we made our way to Llanberis. The A4086 is a beauty of a road in itself.

After Snowdon we went to Llyn Gwynant along the A498 and onto the A4085 at Nantmor. Then at Llanfrothen towards Rhyd on the B4410. Towards Ffestiniog on the B4391. I think it is here towards Yspytty-Ifan, somewhere on the B4391 or where it turns into the B4407 where you have an almost single track road that goes across the moors, that must be one of the best roads of the trip. You can see all the way along and road just undulates with corners thrown in. What a road. Then back onto the A5.

So, what do you guys think? Not a bad little trip for a North Wales novice only armed with a TomTom for guidance or should I have done better?

I spent all day yesterday driving around your awesome roads so thought I would pop in here and spotted this thread Drove the A494 (the full length from Queensferry to Dolgellau), A470, A4212, A5, B4407, B4391, A4086, A498, A543 and B4501....planned the route with military precision . Set off at 8:30, got home 16:00...was knackered to say the least but the roads were everything I was hoping they would be

I made a special effort to do the so-called "triangle," was I correct in turning right on the A543 just after the Sportsman's Arms or should I have carried on to Denbigh and then right onto the B4501?

I would probably have to say the B4501 was the highlight of the day, almost deserted apart from a C32 AMG and a mentalist in a Hillman Imp (obviously doing the same route I was ) Llanberis Pass also stunning but far too many walkers/tourists to really enjoy it, next time I will try and do it on a week day

Glad you enjoyed it. Tell your friends, but not too many of them

Yes, right after the Sportsmans Arms. That's the top of the "Triangle". Buy most any Evo magazine and you will see the the tree lined route you took being used for testing.

yeah, I kept seeing the pics in evo and thinking how good the roads looked. Dont worry, I wont tell anyone...The combination of the amazing roads and quietness is what makes the area so special

glad I got the triangle route right, I was kicking myself afterwards thinking I may have missed a big section of it

I live on Anglesey and I'm the assistant editor for Total 911 magazine. Snowdonia is an excellent area for our magazine's photo-shoots and we've done some in the same areas as Evo. In fact, the cuurent edition of T911 has one such feature.

I'd love to join some of you guys for a run, particularly if I've got a press car for a few days. Just had a 996 Turbo for a week and I get the opportunity fairly often.

Only just discovered the North Wales section here but I'm glad it exists!

I might be popping down to Wales near Christmas. The Am V8 should be here the week before Xmas and I've got some play time booked.

What's the weather like that time off the year?

Also had a look at the 'triangle' and made a quick map in PS.

Thanks for the info on The Evo Triangle.

Unexpected day off today and gorgeous weather, so I took the opportunity to have a drive out.

My car isn't exactly "point and squirt" but we had fun.

Fantastic light for photography too.

Thanks again, guys.

I must try and get along to a Sunday meet sometime.

I have the dubious pleasure of organising the North Wales Meets for the Honda S2000 owners which we normally have the day following an Anglesay Track Day. Last one was a 160 mile route starting at Llandudno Junction and covering about 160 miles back to starting point. Stopped for lunch at Bala and afternoon tea at Afon Wen on A541. A great testing route for all types of driving. If anyone wants the route drop me a line. I haven't saved it on my PC but can soon jot it down from memory.

Which reminds me I got to start thinkig about the 2006 North Wales Meet!
