What cars would you most like to own over say the next 10 years? Ignoring the exotica which I'm never going to be able to afford and accepting that I'm not going to be able to tick the ownership box on all of these, I hope to at least own some of them.

EV

Renault 5 E-Tech - I love the look of these, it would make the perfect 2nd car/runabout and probably the car on this list that I would most likely own.

Vauxhall Astra GSE - not been officially announced yet but if they put that c. 300bhp EV powertrain from the Mokka/Corsa GSE into the current Astra with the checker seats, I would be seriously tempted into an EV as my daily driver (5 a bit small for family duties).

Utility

Land Rover Defender 90 D350 - sure the new Defender is possibly a bit contrived but in 2 door SWB format it's pretty cool isn't it?

VW Transporter T6 Kombi - again, it's a bit "lifestyle" but it's the best-looking van and surely the ultimate do-it-all family utility vehicle.

I love a fast estate but nothing recent really appeals to me.

Hatchbacks

mk7 Ford Fiesta ST - probably the most hot hatchy hot hatch ie small, light, fast, playful, cheap to buy, I'm not sure why I haven't owned one yet to be honest.

Renault Megane 4 RS in Lava Orange - great stance on these and I think the best-looking modern hot hatch.

Saloons

Audi RS3 8V - got a bit of a thing about these in saloon guise, it's mainly about the engine but as an all-round package pretty appealing.

F87 BMW M2 - the original one probably sounds the best, not the best-looking, fastest or most desirable M car but possibly the best value/"most M" of the modern offerings.

Alfa Romeo Giulia Quadrifoglio - I have never owned an Alfa and this is definitely the leftfield "cool" sports saloon of choice.

Sports cars

ND2 MX5 RF - possibly the smallest/lightest MX5 since the NA, finally has some power, NA, manual, light, it's the perfect affordable sports car really, I'm not really sure why I haven't owned one yet.

Alpine A110 - if I could afford it, I'd have this over the MX5

Lotus Emira V6 - if I could afford it, I'd have this over the Alpine!

GT/convertible

Jaguar F-Type Convertible - ideally a pre-facelift V8, as I think they look nicer, would consider a V6 S if the budget didn't stretch to a V8, it would be my perfect retirement "toy".

R129 Mercedes-Benz SL500 - I love these old Mercedes and this would be my backup choice to the Jag, as it's probably a bit more practical for touring.

Classics

Peugeot 205 GTi 1.9 - I love classics from the 80s/90s/early 2000s but most of them command prices beyond what they offer but this is the one that I would make an exception for, as it's the one car that I regret not owning when they were cheap. The Fiesta ST offers way more performance/car for less money and objectively is a much better car but I saw a white 1.9 with the Peugeot Sport stripes on the front grille on the commute the other day and it was just so much cooler.

Ducati Monster M900 in red or yellow

Triumph Speed Triple T509 in black

Hopefully the bikes, the Renault 5 and a handful of the others are at least doable. So what cars feature on your "most wanted" list that you realistically have a shot of owning?

I already have the cars that I want (and need), so there are none really on my most wanted list.

Well....maybe one....an Arial Nomad. An early one, non-supercharged would be fine, would love to try one, but realistically, nowhere to use it apart from the road and I suspect the novelty would wear off quickly (my MX5 covers that).

In fantasy land, I'd have the Nomad along with a range of Unimogs and a Highland estate to use them all on.

My ambition actually is to 'restomod' my 996 C4S. If money were no object (and its not) it would be off to Germany to Werk96 but I envisage doing bits piecemeal with UK based specialists. Im thinking interior retrim for more luxurious leather in a different colour, engine build and Centre Gravity suspension with newer tech dampers/springs.

For my everyday car, I feel its time for EV. I would love to replace my Merc CLS shooting brake with a Taycan 4S Sport Turismo. Realistically, a Polestar 4 is better value used and has a better range. Maybe even a Jaguar iPace to leave more £ for the 996!

I do like the F90 M5 but the use case is poor with terrible roads and high running costs. Its built for European roads not our poxy goat tracks, with speed humps and cameras.

VW Scirocco
Audi R8
Maserati Granturismo.

I’ve owned all the other cars on my to-do list, but I’m quite content with the current cars that I have, so that short list might well take me another ten years anyway.

For the first time in my life I have no real wants or needs as I feel I have done what I wanted.

Not sure it's a good thing!

Ripple bonnet 2cv or 2cv van, Honda S660, Lexus LS500 when I retire. Oh, and a quick Mini when my slow one dies...

I have a few things on my imaginary list lined up for when our Merc needs to go but also I'm planning on buying something a bit more special/impractical for my 50th in a few years time. The list currently looks like:

- Mini GP1 or a unicorn spec R53 JCW (love R53s having owned 2 and an R50 so figure I could get the very best of that generation of car)
- 996 911 (scared to death of stories of 10 grand engine rebuilds etc but still want one)
- slightly newer Cayman
- Passat R36 estate
- B7 or B8 RS4 wagon
- Mini Clubman JCW (R55 would have to be unicorn spec but I'm growing to like the All4 gen 3 JCWs too now)
- S212 Merc E-Class estate (love our S204 so E-Class = more of the same but massive boot)

Surprised to see my current family car and previous one on the list (Upgraded from Merc S212 to T6 Kombi)

To be honest, my changes almost daily!

Realistically I'd need to move my garage around quite a lot (as it's used as a workshop as well) to allow me to fit a bigger car in than a Caterham.

Right now I have a thing for
- smaller, lighter 2 door coupes (Alpine A110, fruity Cayman)
- hot hatchback (everything from a golf GTI to fiesta/focus ST, including smaller warm hatches like Up! GTI)

Staying relatively realistic(ish) a nice current garage for me would be,
Caterham/atom for track,
Camper like T5 or similar to tow track car and daily trips out.
E60 M5 because that engine.
360 spider manual or road trips.
Keep my current F150 Lightning for cocking about.
Keep the Mrs 595 comp for small duties.

Range Rover L405 5.0 Supercharged and a Vauxhall VX4/90 or Ventora.

A Jaguar XE Project 8 would be fab but I don't think that's going to happen any time soon.

BMW G20 330e with a remap to 400 bhp
BMW i4 M50

Those Audi S6 etrons look pretty nice. Might have to wait a while for them to depreciate enough

One of those silly Chinese saloon cars with 1000+ bhp

An MX-5 with some kind of engine swap like 2.5 from the Mazda 6, or maybe a turbo/supercharged one.

If I move to the Philippines I’d consider something like an old EG Civic with K24 engine swap and a few other choice mods to help it breathe better, they are popular there and look very fun.

My list is similar now to how it’s been for years with the exception of the Alpine tacked on.

B5 RS4
E90 M3 / F10 M5 / F30 Alpina B3
V8 Vantage
Megane R26.R / 275 Trophy
Toyota Century
Alpine A110

Honestly these are cars I’d want to drive once in my life rather than own:
E60/61 M5
Any Viper
300SL Gullwing
Lotus Elan
Ariel Atom (4)
F355
2CV
Suzuki Jimny
An ‘00s German V8 Saloon (RS4, C63, M3)

I’d also happily own any of the above if I could afford
