I’ve got a 2013 BMW 320 with the basic sound system. Over a year ago I noticed that both RHS speakers (front and rear) weren’t working. As I rarely use the car it’s taken me all this time to look into it! I initially assumed that the amp in the head unit was at fault until someone suggested looking at the speakers. I swapped the left rear to the front right and it worked, I therefore thought I’d found the issue?

I ordered two used speakers from eBay and installed them at the rear but they didn’t work. I then tried them at the front and they worked ok. I then put the old one from the front left into the rear left, that worked. I then put the old front right into the rear right, that worked but the front right stopped working. I then put the right rear to the front right that worked and I was left with three working speakers.

I ordered another speaker from eBay, put that in the rear left but the front right stopped working. I’ve put a multi meter on the speakers that stopped working and they appear to be dead.

So, it seems that the system doesn't like having four speakers connected, any ideas?

it could be that the amp in the source is failing under load, you said you tested the speakers how did you do that? IIRC you can test them for continuity and if you don't get that then the speaker is buggered

I used a multimeter, my neighbour knows a bit about electronics so he showed me which setting to use (it wasn’t the continuity setting). I tested the speaker which came today before fitting and the ones I suspected were dead and was getting a reading on the brand new second hand one, nothing on the duff ones.
