An apparently devout needle watcher wrote into my local paper to complain about driving on a particular road. It had originally been a NSL, but had changed a couple of years back to a mosaic of 50's, 40's, 30's.
He'd religiously kept the needle pointing at the correct number, but recently the limits have dropped again, with long stretches of 30's for no apparent reason. Again he's kept the needle on the correct number but is now complaining that he feels threatened by the number of cars, bikes and lorries that overtake him. He must have had some stick for it as well.
Now I'm not sure what he was actually complaining about, but basically he says that noone obeys the limits apart from himself, and why aren't they enforcing the speed limit.
He now avoids the road altogether and goes a different longer way to avoid the agravation.

So the lower number of vehicles on that road will most likely reduce the accident rate, and the authorities will claim another victory for reduced speed limits.

Unlikely. Probably be increased by the number of dnagerous overtakes that people attempt when following the others like him who have not left the road.

interesting that lowering the speed limit is having the effect of moving the people that usually stick to the speed limit onto other roads!!

Personally get very nervous when driving above the speed limit on roads that are signed very low. Just asking for a blatter of 2020 laser flashes!

Moving the traffic on to other roads is a common occurance when speed limits are reduced. However, the Traffic Statistics do not reflect the number of vehicles on any given road, merely the accidents.

It is also worth noting that around the A12 in Essex, they were going to put up a speed camera because there were three accidents. One was a cyclist who ran into the back of a stationary car. One was a lorry which slid off the road due to fog/slippery conditions, and the third I can't remember. BUT none of them were related to excessive speed at all, yet they were trying to justify the use of a camera !!

Incredible stuff.

I sometimes use the old 40MPH road instead of the new 70MPH A500 M6 to Nantwich link road. Reason is that the new road frequently has a semi-hidden (until it's too late) portable camera. Even knowing this, it's still a dream road for speed and it's easy to watch the road and not your speedo and let the speed rise, especially as you accelerate away from the last roundabout and the road drifts downhill. I find it simpler to avoid it.
