York - decent restaurants

Heading to York for a night soon for my wifes 50th. Got a great hotel (The Grand) but looking for a really nice restaurant (French, traditional British) thats open on a Sunday night. Ideally A-la Carte , so no tasting menus but prefer mid to high end and walkable form the hotel.

It's a long long time since I've stayed there so I don't know whats good and what isn't - any recommendations?

Shame about Roots. We went to La Rustique on a Sunday night a few weeks ago and enjoyed it.

The grand hotels own spa has a nice Asian fusion.place and usually quiet compared to it's main ....oh plus nice cocktails too. Not exactly your requirements but in case others visiting this thread

Not if you book in the Belmont room upstairs.
It will always have a queue downstairs.

Only time I’ve not seen a queue outside is when it’s been shut.

We've been to the one in Harrogate once. It was fine, but it's very expensive for what it is, and as for queuing down the street, no thanks.

I think it's rather like The Magpie Cafe in Whitby; nothing special, but equally, there's nothing wrong with it either. Again, people queue down the street.

Been to all the Betty's, one we tend to visit nowadays is the one at Northallerton as easy parking and always straight in no queuing.

We've eaten here a couple of times. Lovely location, and it is more a very good brasserie rather than high end eating, but the food is very good indeed...

We go to York on holiday once or twice a year, and have walked down that street a fair few times and I've never noticed that place before. Looking at the menu, it looks quite good. Next time we are there, we might have a look.
