Remember when cup holders weren t a thing?

I’m driving an older vehicle today & was totally bewildered not to find a cup holder for my coffee.
(I did find one eventually but there is only one in reach of the driver)
It reminded me of a time (I think the 90’s) when top gear et al included number of cup holders in their reviews (possibly even in printed stats in the back of magazines if you recall them?). I was convinced at the time this was a piss take, I wanted to here 0-60 times not how many cup holders a vehicle had
I grew up in an era when the only thing consumed in a car were travel sweets - maybe occasionally an opal fruit. Water came from the tap not a bottle when you’d stopped, cup holders were completely alien to me but now having without seems unthinkable (except to my Old man who still has the “nothing consumed in his vehicles” belief)

I can recall many many years ago when I was a child and the drink drive advertising first started along the lines of “don’t drink and drive” saying to my Grandad “ “We don’t drink and drive do we - we always stop”Reminded me of this classic.....

Had a MK3 escort back in the day and if you opened the glovebox there were two circular indentations to place your cup of tea when stationary. Thought it was quite neat and quite imaginative for Ford but you definitely couldn t drive with them in place though.
The Mk1 and 2 Focus are the same. I recall driving a colleague somewhere in a motor-pool Focus and having to stop for petrol. My colleague bought a cup of coffee to take away and, upon return to the car, opened the glove compartment and set the cup in the indented bit of the lid. I said that we needed to get going. The colleague said that wouldn't be a problem and confirmed that everything would be fine because 'the coffee cup was in the cupholder'. I protested, but got nowhere.We set off. Thirty seconds later, the cup of coffee fell out of the 'cupholder' and its contents divided themselves between my colleague's trousers, the carpet and the centre console. Some people aren't very bright; equally, some cars aren't one's own...
The Mk2 improved upon the non-cupholder by coming equipped with a proper cupholder that is entirely useless. It is situated under the central armrest, some distance behind the handbrake. It's not really possible to reach from the driver's seat.
