Okay! Nobody seems to want to give me or even sell me their old laptop so it's time to bite the bullet and - gasp! - pay for a new one. I think I've narrowed it down to an IBM Thinkpad of some description.

But I was wondering - can you guys recommend a supplier? The company that supplies my desktop PCs doesn't sell IBM.

Thanks!

To be honest I'd just whack the model into http://froogle.google.co.uk and choose the best price/size supplier.

The warranty is underwritten by IBM so if it blows up the support you will get will be similar between vendors.

Froogle just saves you a few quid.

See if you know someone that works for IBM - I believe they get decent staff discounts (well they did when I last bought one!).

Not sure about the value of the discount for employees. My BiL works for them and when I was looking he logged into some IBM site where he could purchase stuff.

Nearly every model could be purchased via an internet supplier (the usual suspects) for less!

May also be worth checking www.kelkoo.co.uk

I work for IBM, and our discount is crap.

You can purchase Lenovo kit (as all IBM PC equipment is now known as) direct from www.lenovo.com/think/products/uk/en/

Thinkpads are typically a bit more expensive than other makes, but it is great kit. In seven years I've had three Thinkpads and not a single thing has gone wrong on any of them.

That's exactly why I want one. I'm hugely unimpressed with Compaq laptops, and I used to have a Toshiba which was well-mannered but not very exciting. I've done my research and a ThinkPad seems to be a good choice.
