HMRC log in issues / NI number problem.
Discussion
Back in 2024 I applied on behalf of my Dad for some PIP, and as power of attorney I needed to add my NI number.
I received a call from the benefits people telling me my NI number didn't correlate with my details I'd given, and to go call HMRC.
One call to HMRC, it transpires my NI number was being used by (or issued to) another person since 2012 - that's the eventual explanation I got, it was that it was issued to someone in that year, and as the person seems to have happily been working and paying their dues, thus it wasn't viewed as fraudulent and didn't flag up.
However, despite having verbal, not written reassurance from HMRC (which they declined to provide for some odd reason)they told me the issue was sorted (in August 24).
I've started getting letters from my pension provider that my details don't match and they can't claim the full tax relief on my contributions, which is odd because I've had said (supplementary) pension since 2016 - however, that is currently being chased up by a Senior guy at the Pru for me.Whenever I try to log in to the Govt HMRC app, it locks me out saying my details don't match.
My questions are:
Does this happen in a few cases and should I be worried about it?
and
I will of course call HMRC to try and clear this up, but what kind of information should I ask them to provide for my own future reference and reassurance?.
FWIW I've never been self employed, and have been at my current job for 28 years, prior to that there's a solid paper trail of me working under PAYE.
TIA for any advice or information.
