Paphos

Heading to Paphos at the weekend with the missus and our 4 girls (16, 14, 13 and 9). Have obviously checked recommendations for things to do/see online but wondered if anyone had any personal experiences to share? Day trips, boat trips, restaurant recommendations etc? Especially interested in where to go for the best view of the sunset (with a cold beer!).

Great place for lunch or even dinner. Would make a fantastic sunset as its halfway up the hill and looks down over the coast. Its a bit of a rally stage to get too but seems all hire car's are capable rally car's.

Also if you have a hire car and dont mind a bit of time in the car. a drive to the top of Mount Olimbos is great. although security at the top may be a bit more strict than when i went when i asked the armed gate guard if i could walk around the side of the base to the top of the hill and he just mumbled "yes".

The 7 St Georges restaurant is fabulous.

Avoid anything/everything with "Aphrodite" in the name.

If you have a car the Troodos Mountains is a great drive.

Ancient Kourion is incredible, go later in the afternoon as it's less busy.

The kids may like Rikko’s Beach cafe, more of an old hippie place with cats, dogs, chickens, and ducks wandering about. Beeroom in Paphos old town was good if you fancy an alternative to the tourist places along with some craft beers and ciders.

Following with interest, I've been a few times but so long ago that any recommendations beyond the well known attractions would be obsolete, keen to go back though.

I've been wandering around on Google Maps tonight, some bits are still familiar but a lot has changed, I was looking for the random lift I'd remembered between the old town and new but it looks like that's been somewhat modernised

We had a decent lunch after wondering around the archeological site so came back a different evening for a mixed grill and couple bottles of wine in here.

Great fresh food, decent quality, LOADS of it and decent prices . Only thing of note, we timed it right eating around 7ish. As later in the evening the music gets cranked up and a bit doof doofy.

But while its quiet it was great.

I do love Paphos - great for things to do and some brilliant restaurants and bars - only negative is it isn't great for beaches compared to Protoras/Ayia Napa.

Things we normally fit in:

Viklari (The Last Castle) - been mentioned a few times but is a lovely restaurant on the Akamis peninsula with some stunning views and great service. The menu is simple - pork, chicken or a mix, served with fresh salad and Cypriot wedges - probably the best Souvlaki I've had anywhere.

The kitchen is just as you walk in as well:



The road up there is a little hairy and it's worth taking it easy unless you've rented a 4x4. There is some debate as to whether going there is against the "no off roading" policy of most hire places - I checked with Europcar last time and they said as long as the road appears on Google Maps it's fine, even if it is unfinished. The car park is also chock full of hire cars whenever you go....

The Wooden Pub - a great little bar down by the harbour with a large selection of beers, free snacks and mini board games on every table - a great place to sit and watch the world go by.

Kouklia - a small village about 20 minutes out of town near Aphrodite Hills, the main square has 2 or 3 eateries that club together and do a Cypriot night on a Thursday - with lovely all inclusive food, great music and dancing - just missing the plate throwing. Sadly the place we went to (Gabriel's) looks to be closed now, worth seeing if the other taverns in the square have carried it on.

Aphrodite Hills is worth a visit - really nice development with some stunning properties and one of my favourite golf courses in the world - not sure I'd stay there again though as it's quite far out of town and taxis get a bit expensive.

Aphrodite's Rock is just that - a rock. Worth visiting but I wouldn't stay too long there.

For sunsets anywhere along the main drag around the harbour should work well - we found a nice (but expensive) beach bar about halfway between where we were staying (Olympic Lagoon) and the harbour.

Also watch for speed traps on the motorway, I was relived of €99 for going a little quickly on the approach to Paphos.

Bonamere Beach Bar down near the airport is nice as well, actually has a decent beach and lovely food and drink.

Maybe ties in with the comment about avoiding anything with the word Aphrodite in it.

I'd tend to agree, the rock is worth a look if you're passing and it's sunset but I wouldn't get in the water to swim around it and find eternal love or whatever it is - the baths were a dried-up hole when I went, the drive up there was fun though and we found a lot of nice beaches on the west side of the island as well as random herds of goats just wandering around with their bells ringing

I know the days of 50p pints of Keo and 30 course mezes for £8 will be long gone but it's such an awesome island, the south at least, the north situation just annoys me.

Another vote for Viklari - I have fond childhood memories going there, always on the way to Lara beach and usually in a Mitsubishi Lancer prior to me being deemed old enough to sit in the back of a Vitara.

In 1995 my ol' man took a Cypriot work colleague there for lunch and ended up helping the old boy Savvas for a couple of hours laying the path you walk on to/from the car park, then got a free lunch

Last time I went there, 2010, you needed to book, so I imagine the same still applies. Used to close at sunset so if going for supper an earlier one would be required.

Definitely not as cheap as it used to be but we were pleasantly surprised that it was cheaper than we were expecting a couple of years ago.

Just make sure if you book if there s more than two of you - it gets very busy

Coral bay is nice and has good food


There s a fantastic bakery in peyia

Worth seeking out an ‘Ocean Basket’ restaurant. It’s a chain, seemingly mainly on Cyprus, but fantastic seafood for not big prices
