You know what? It *really* helps, if you insist on posting something paywalled, to at least give a summary of what the article says?

Not going to cut and paste the whole story, but first line is 'DAVID LAMMY is taking legal action to block publication of foreign nationals’ crime rates in England and Wales, provoking claims of a “cover-up”.'

He's not in the role any more so a non-story now?

Yes, Lammy is a stark warning. Prospective cabinet ministers could be interviewed to scrutinise where their loyalties sit, and sign a binding contract.
Britain first, or you don't get the job.

Its not him personally its the MoJ who are appealing it on the basis that revealing the data will allow people to identify offenders (BS) and that it will cost too much to collect all the data (also BS but they WILL make it cost a lot if they lose just, because).

"There are lies, damned lies and Government Statistics"

I don't see what benefit there is in publishing these stats. Either they won't show what people think they should, and people scream "lies", or they do and it inflames the current unrest further. Either way, we are in a powder keg moment and it won't take much to set it off.

Oh, and when I say people I mean people who take the flags down as well as those who put them up.

Seems odd. Information is just information. Why would you want to suppress it?
Suggests it is acutely embarrassing.

God forbid we should be told the truth and statistics should be accurate

The last time I was stopped in person for speeding my speed was 86mph, and the officer said he had to do 120mph to catch me. I'm sure both were accurate statements but each gives a very different picture of the events.

Whilst crime stats are recorded in detail - I think those seeking this information are looking for a high level picture.

Not out of 100,000 theft offences which ones were under £100 and which over £100... for example.

One Pher moaned a couple of days ago about even having to provide links. Apparently we are "lazy" and should do our own research.

Do you think if government institutions for the past 20 years were transparent, truthful and humble we’d have the current level of discontent?

What’s the actual position on this? The sticky at the top of NP&E leads to forum rules which says

PH Forum Rules said:
Do not copy and paste articles from newspapers or news sites (this is a breach of their copyright and any such threads will be deleted)
Now, I know other forums insist on a very detailed synopsis and lengthy quotes of even free-to-read articles, but it looks from that as though the rules here are the opposite.

The position is that summary is fine and copy and paste is not (as it says wink )

I'm obviously not speaking for the admins/mods, but I note that the rule says "Do not copy and paste articles" not "Do not copy and paste from articles."

Just pasting entire texts from other sources (be they news outlets or otherwise) is firmly against copyright.

However copyright doesn't apply when the material is used for comment or criticism.

Pasting a pertinent paragraph or quote from an article and then giving your thoughts or opinions on it, or using it to expand/support a point you're making in a post, does not fall foul of copyright. Especially if it's attributed or linked to.

There has to be 'reasonable use' - you can't copy the entire body of an article and then just add a line "I think this is bad and David Lammy sucks' at the end. However you're entirely within the law to pop in the opening paragraph (which usually summarises the story) and then add your own opinion or takeaway.

Whether that is the view of those who make and enforce the rules on PH is another matter of course. But I have pasted/quoted from news articles in that way and never had any issues from the team.

More generally, it's a forum bugbear of mine when people just post links to a news story (double bugbear if it's a paywall) and then either add no opinion or context of their own or just some cryptic smartarse one-liner like "Love to see it! [sniggering smilie]" or "Wow!".

It's a discussion forum, not a newsfeed. If I want to have news stories fed to me I can get that elsewhere. This is the equivalent of someone sitting down next to you, pushing an open newspaper in front of you and just staring at you in silence.

You know full well why he's spending tax payers money to prevent those same tax payers from seeing total number of convictions by nationality; the only logical conclusion can be that he knows that we won't like what we see.

And there's nothing like the government burying statistics to calm everyone down!
