Selling expensive watch

I am considering selling a watch I own, a Patek Philippe, which I have owned from new for the last 17 years. Since I retired I haven’t worn a watch so it is sitting in its box in the back of a cupboard.

Having never tried to sell something like this where are the most reputable/safest places to sell It? I have little desire to put it on eBay or similar!

The simplest way is to sell it to a dealer like Watchfinder who have a process for giving you an initial offer estimate through their website.

Chrono24 is popular selling platform but there are risks for a private seller that if you are not keen on eBay then you definitely won’t like. Personally I prefer eBay.

I recently sold a Breitling and an Omega for the same reason.

I went to a local very reputable jeweller and we struck a deal there and then that suited us both and the job was done.

Chrono24 and eBay have their faults but they offer a big market of browsers. C24 want 6.5% of the sale price as commission from memory. EBay don’t do that but they deduct the buyer protection fees from the sale proceeds (a lot less than 6.5% IME).

Watchfinder offers are lowball. I never bothered with them; the main objective was to stop them emailing me any further.

I bought from subdial and was impressed. No idea what their sell side is like.

What about auction?
Philipps charge 7% iirc and you can set a reserve
Antiquorum is another one.

With something like a Patek always worth looking at all the options.

EBay’s buyer protection also helps the seller. As the watch goes to eBay’s authenticity department the payment is held

I ve used it when selling a couple of expensive watches.
Great service. First rate protection for the seller & buyer & it s free over certain value.
I listed mine as buy it now, priced thousands above the offers from other methods.
Tiny selling fees back then, sometimes none for private sellers.
Sold quickly.
