Giant beetle?

I picked up a piece of wood today and found signs of something huge that had been tunnelling. The holes are 7-10mm in diameter. Any idea what it was?

Where did you pick it up? There are plenty of marine critters who bore holes like that, it's not unusual on bits of driftwood. Teredo and gribble are the most common.

Found on a footpath about a mile from a river estuary. Looks to have come from a large tree; presume a dog carried it from somewhere. It's very light (the wood not the dog).
