E46 air conditioning compressor connector ID needed

Hi guys - my A/C has been knackered for years and this hot weather has spurred me into at least finding out what is wrong with it! Last time I looked I found this sensor or switch connector was un-plugged..............



I remember finding where it should go but could not for the life of me get it to seat properly! So I just gave up as you do

So I'm back on the case and need to know what it's called and actually does and if that's the problem. I've spent hours online and as far as I've got is finding out where it goes...........

Hold the front page!! the powers of AI (wasn't a thing when I first investigated) has come trumps...........



So I'm off to find out if I can get it seated properly. If not is it possible to by-pass it to check for any other faults?
