I have the misfortune to have a JW church less than a mile from my gaff so frequently have these shiny faced idiots banging on my door.

Normally I’d not open the door or politely tell them to do one (don’t see the need for aggression/rudeness).

Unfortunately for them I had time to spare when 2 of them called yesterday, dressed as if going to a wedding. To paraphrase it I invited them into learn how they got sucked into a cult and whether I can help them escape, and explained how God is a human invention designed to control other humans.

Don’t think they’ll be knocking again. Hopefully.

I genuinely feel sorry for these victims.

How do you deal with these and other religious nutters?

I'm quite happy to have a chat if they send the fitties around! biggrin

But even saying no thanks, still elicits them trying to shove a cheap leaflet into your hand.

Pretty much as you did. I ask them what they believe and, more importantly, why they believe it. That usually leads into asking why they don't believe in any of the other gods and once they go to the bible I ask them to, "tell me why I should care what the bible says... without mentioning the bible".

It won't ever happen but if just one person actually thinks about why they believe what they do then I count that as a win.

I just smile and say "Sorry, I'm not religious, it's not my bag". It works well and doesn't cause offence. smile

I politely tell them I'm not interested and wish them a nice day.
As cold callers go they're not the worst.

Quite.

I'm not religious but each to their own. No need to be rude or act like a weirdo.

Many years ago I said:
It was the middle of the afternoon, and I was in my house, in Middle England, tiling my kitchen walls. There's a knock on the door, so I open it to see two very earnest, very smiley men in cheap suits, both carrying very shiny fake crocodile briefcases. Yes, you know what they wanted as well as I did.

So I was about to trot out my standard, stock-in-trade greeting for these people, when the younger of the two spoke, and completely threw me.

"Can you speak French?" he said. Not "Hello", not "Excuse me Sir", just "Can you speak French?". I can, as a matter of fact.
"Yes." I replied.
"Oh." He said. "Can you?"
"Yes, I can." I elaborated
"You? You can speak French?"
"Yes, I can speak French." I'm becoming really rather intrigued by now.
"Ah." He turned to his colleague. "He can speak French." he whispered, handing his colleague the leaflet he'd been holding, part of which I'd already read upside down whilst he'd been interrogating me. It was entitled Bringing God closer to you. His colleague took the leaflet and handed back another, very similar, but printed in French.
The younger man turned back to me, and with a peculiarly confused expression, he proffered the leaflet.
"Bonjour?" he said.

I cannot remember the last time when anything other that charity cheats or people wanted to clean my gutters or someone telling me that their religion is best so I look out of the window and dont answer the door unless I see a police car first.

I like to ask questions like:

Why does God only have 10 things he needs us to do?
Why is it if we break one commandment, just once, we spend forever in hell? Isn't that a bit harsh?
Why is it ok for a man to impregnate both his daughters?
Who planted all those shark skeletons in the salt flats showing evolution?
Who planted dinosaur bones?
How can the earth be 6000 years old when we can radiocarbon date?

We had this at our old house. Always groups of attractive young ladies doing the rounds. But like most people I just say no thank you.

A colleague at work lived with his parents, he invited them in... & then went out.

I used to live a few yards from a 'Kingdom Hall'.
I wasn't bothered once in thirteen years.
(Apparently... they were told not to 'canvas' the neighbourhood).

There is no "being a dick" in asking someone to justify their belief if they have already approached you to proclaim it.

Inviting a JW into the house to 'prove them wrong' as a gotcha is exactly the kind of behaviour I expect from top PHers.
