Water purifier valve damage

Changed my tap a couple of years ago but kept the old tap purifier system as it was fine. However i had to source a different size purifier adapter to this one:

Recently the cold water pressure was lower than the hot so i assumed a small blockage in system somewhere. Active drip off the pipes and on investigation the "new" adapter was fully calcified and loose. I took it off to find the inside calcified and the actual body cracked:



So looked around and i can only find similar, cheap, replacements.

1. How has the body cracked - tightening too much? - Cracked when tightening main cold feed on the other end? - general wear and tear?
2. When did the calcification build up, pre or post damage?
2. Do i need a better quality adapter?

Probably cracked from being too thin at the shoulder, not enough meat in it between the valve part of the bore and the outside after it was threaded, and probably a crudely cut thread starting the crack. Probably not the best quality brass either. I've see a few things like this where the limits of everything had been pushed to cheapen it.

Calcification will have (can only have!) started from it weeping, either from being loose or cracked. Unless it is really really porous.

Yes you need the best quality bits you can find - if it goes wrong you don't notice until late on and the consequences of failure can be expensive.

Also personally I'd split the problem up. That fitting exists to be quick & cheap to supply & fit, not to be good.

Fit a proper tee joint, fit a decent full bore valve off the tee (like a Pegler T-handle), and if you can't find the tee and valve the right size already then do those in full size and add an adapter at the valve outlet.
