Sorting out insurance and tax before buying new vehicle

Buying a 2nd hand car which i have just been told is ready to pick up tomorrow. What do I do in terms of insurance, do I tell them I want the cover for the new car to start tomorrow? I am under the impression that I can't tax the car until there is insurance in my name, but it can take the insurance database a few hours to update.

Can’t the dealer sort the tax out for you? Whenever I’ve changed, it’s done there and then and I supply the payment details.

As for insurance, just tell them the date you want to change and jobs a good ‘un!

Tax = do it on your phone the moment the sale is complete.
Insurance= the same, sometimes 24hr temporary insurance works well to get home and then organise properly.

Having just helped my son buy his first car I investigated ways of saving him money. The average difference in premium between one starting tomorrow and one starting in 20 days was 38%.

Upshot was, he bought the car, we collected it using the Cuvva app (cost around £10 to drive it home), then left it on the drive for 15 days until his full insurance kicked in. Saved him around £300 and as he was on holiday most of that time really didn’t impact his use of the car.

He actually gave me the new keeper slip so I could do the tax, but then read it needs to be insured first

Just concerned if I give the insurance the date I want it to change over, i.e tomorrow, then the insurance database takes time to update. My car is going to scrap at 7pm tonight so could get it it to change over later, but is there then not an overlap that the car will have two insurance policies?

I'd check with your insurer - the MID gets updated in batches four times a day, so assuming they send their own automated batches, there should be no crossover.

You REALLY are over-thinking things.

Insurance companies deal with this 1000 times a day. Just ring them & they will sort it.

As for tax, you should be able to do it immediately you have bought.

Last private purchase I did I insured it on the drive & taxed it 5 min later before moving the car.

Check with insurance company. - I know mine specifically says that they will cover both cars for the day of change over to allow for this exact circumstance. I just told them the day before I picked up new car and taxed at the dealer before I drove off the forecourt.

As it’s the weekend unless they have an online portal you may now not be able to make contact but I’d try nevertheless.
As said it’s not a rare request and just tell them you want cover to be changed over to the new car by say 1pm tomorrow assuming you are picking it up in the am.
